As a result of the stroke, she had been bedridden for nearly a year prior to her death. Interred on September 27, 1952 in the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) Section of the Oakland Cemetery, in Oakland, Maryland. OBITUARY: Cumberland Evening Times (Cumberland, Maryland), Sep 26, 1952, Page 8 (VERBATIM AS PUBLISHED) OAKLAND – Mrs. Edna A Wharton, 77, widow of J. William Wharton, died at her home on Liberty Street here following an illness on one year. She had been a patient in Garrett County Memorial Hospital for three months during that time. She was born April 26, 1875, in Oakland, the daughter of the late John W. and Eva M. (Waltz) Arnold. She attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church and was a member of Garrett Temple 17, Pythian Sister, which she served for a number of years as chief. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd M. Loraw, of Grafton, W.Va., who has been with her mother during her illness: six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A son, Gilderoy Wharton, was killed in an automobile accident several years ago. Services will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at her residence by Rev. Luther L. Hare, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery. (Transcribed verbatim by Ronn E Friend, great-grandson of Edna Arnold Whorton.) NOTE 1: The above obituary, published in the September 26, 1953 edition of The Cumberland Times, is from the family albums of her granddaughter, Susan Edna (Whorton) Friend. The obituary along with a copy of Edna's will were enclosed in an envelop inscribed "Grandmother Whorton's Obituary and Will." Susan made a notation on the envelope about the misspelling of Edna's surname as Wharton rather than Whorton. The middle initial "A" noted in the obituary refers to her maiden name Arnold, not to any of her three middle names "Ora, Emma, Yantz." Prior to her marriage to J. W. Whorton, she often signed her name Edna OEY Arnold. After her marriage, she used Mrs. J. W. Whorton or Edna A. Whorton for official documents, including her will and certain real estate transactions. NOTE 2: The envelop also contained a copy of Edna Whorton's will. She willed to her daughter Winona M. Loraw her home and personal property on Liberty Street in Oakland and left each of her six grandchildren a sum of money as follows: Susan Edna Friend, $150.00; Alice Marion Jessee, $1.00; Joseph William Whorton, $1.00; Martha Ellen Kemp, $100.00; Adalee Whorton, $150.00; and Arnold Wayne Whorton, $1.00. Attached to the will was a hand written list of Hauser, Waltz, Arnold and Whorton family heirlooms, and keepsakes that Winona M. Loraw later gave Edna's granddaughter Susan Edna Friend. Among these items were the Adam and Sivilla Hauser Family Bible, the William and Mary Hauser Waltz family Bible, and the David Waltz family Bibles, all containing birth, marriage, and death records of family members; a brief written history of the Waltz, Hauser, Arnold, and Whorton families compiled by Winona Arnold Loraw; collection of personal letters and postcards; collection of gold and silver coins; photo albums of Hauser, Waltz, Arnold and Whorton families; framed shadow boxes of hair weavings made by Eva Marion (Waltz) Arnold from hair of family members and guests to her home; Edna's fine china place settings, serving platters, and silverware; German dolls; quilts made by Mary Hauser Waltz and Eva Waltz Arnold; and few pieces of furniture.
