As a result of a relationship with Lydia Emma Wonderly (1894-1982) during the summer of 1912, a daughter: Susan Edna Whorton: b. 11 Mar 1913; d. 12 Apr 1988 In 1917, married Mary Louise Friend (1894-1953) in Oakland, Maryland. Of this union, five children: 1. Alice Marion: b. 18 May 1918; d. 10 May 1956 2. Joseph William: b. 23 Dec 1922; d. 31 May 1988 3. Martha Ellen: b. 17 Jan 1925; d. 20 Mar 1953 4. Ada Lee: b. 18 Apr 1926; d. 15 Feb 1992 5. Arnold Wayne: 26 Jan 1928; d. 6 Jul 1970 Gilderoy and Mary were living on Third Street with their five young children at the time of his accidental death on July 13, 1935, when a truck he was riding in collided with another truck parked on the road near Oakland without lights. According to newspaper accounts at the time, Ira and Hamilton Weeks, of Mountain Lake Park, were under the influence of liquor the night of the accident and were on the road in their parked truck. The two men were later convicted of manslaughter. Susan wrote in the margin of the obituary that she was not mentioned in the obituary as a daughter. She also wrote that the night before the funeral service, she slept with her grandmother [Edna] Whorton who sobbed throughout the night, but at the funeral service was composed and strong for the family.] GILDEROY WHORTON DIES IN WRECK: TWO MEN HELD - Ira Weeks and Hamilton Weeks Held on Charges of Illegal Parking on Highway FUNERAL WAS YESTERDAY Ira Weeks and Hamilton Weeks, of Lock Lynn, occupants oof a parked truck into which another truck crashed last Saturday night with fatal injuries to Gilderoy Whorton, 42, were held for action of the September grand jury following an inquest held by Charles F. White, county coroner, on Tuesday afternoon. The charge under which the men were held was illegal parking of their truck. Evidence at the coroner's inquest was that the two men parked their truck without lights on the highway, two miles north of Oakland. Witnesses also stated that the occupants of the parked truck appeared to be intoxicated. The defendants were released under bonds of $500 each. Members of the coroner's jury were H. C. Sincell, chairman; James Hart, James Kerins, Carl Brown, Harold Harned, Leo Helbig, Floyd R. Utterback, Lester Bittinger, Floyd Stahl, William Glotfelty, E. G. Naylor and Arthur Naylor. Say Truck Was Unlighted. Raymond Spear, of Accident, who was driving his car from Oakland toward home and who was tat the scene when the wreck occurred, testified that the truck of Lloyd R. "Mac" Tasker of Oakland, in which Whorton was riding, was traveling toward Oakland and struck the rear of the Weeks truck, parked on the right of the road. The Weeks truck had no lights, he stated. Ralph Spear, Donald Casteel, Vernon Spear and James Fresh, all of Accident, who were riding with Spear, also testified. Mrs. Linn Phillips, Uniontown, Pa., said she and her husband drove past the parked truck an hour before the fatal crash and that she saw no lights on the vehicle. Sheriff Clarence Spear and Corporal Thomas Currie said they found Ira Weeks asleep in the truck, following the crash, and apprehended Hamilton Weeks a short distance away. No testimony was offered by Tasker or the two Weeks brothers. The accident occurred about eleven o'clock Saturday night as Whorton was returning from Cumberland where he had completed a contract. He died almost instantly from a broken neck. Mac Tasker, driver, suffered slight bruises, and Berne Teter, who had gotten into the truck at Deep Creek enroute to his home here, was not injured. Funeral services for the deceased were conducted Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from his late residence on Third Street, with Rev. David C. Trimble and Rev. C. A. Shilke officiating. Interment was in Oakland cemetery, with members of the Oakland Fire Department in charge. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Whorton, his widow and five children, Alice Marion, Joseph, Martha, Ada Lee, and Arnold Wayne; also a sister, Mrs. Winona Loraw, of Grafton, West Va. (Transcribed by Ronn E. Friend, grandson.)
