Hook ~~~ The Chico Enterprise-Record, Chico, CA, Monday, Nov 15, 1954, pg 2: "Chico Pioneer, Mrs. Edna Hook, Dies at Rest Home --- Mrs. Edna Rose Hook died Saturday evening following an extended illness at the Taylor Rest Home here. "Mrs. Hook was born May 17, 1869, in Berryville, Arkansas, to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Whiteley. Her grandfather was pastor of the First Baptist Church in his home town for more than 50 years and the Whiteley Baptist Church in his home town for more than 50 years and the Whiteley Baptist Church was built as a memorial to him. "During the '49 gold rush, her father spent two years in San Francisco. His desire to return and bring his family with him to the West led him to close his business in the East; and on April 11, 1880, started out to cross the plains. "Throughout their journey they were compelled to use water where ever it was available and much sickness prevailed. Her mother was taken ill with Mountain Fever and was too ill to travel, however they were fortunate in finding a house to live in while she recovered. "On July 14 they found themselves in Ironside, Ore., after three months, and three days on the trail. By spring the Hooks had become part of this settlement, and had purchased the ranch where they were living. "On May 26, 1889, the then Miss Whiteley was married to Israel Rose. Four children were born to them---Ethel, Chester, Bernice and Raleigh. They had always looked forward to having a home in California, and when Mr. Rose visited here he was impressed with the ideal climate, Chico especially appealed to him. "Following his death, she and her four children moved to California, arriving in Chico Oct. 15, 1911. A few months later they located in a home on Kennedy Avenue where they lived until fire destroyed their home. Mrs. Rose (Mrs. Hook) then built a home on the Esplanade and Memorial Way, across from the Bi dwell Mansion. "On Dec. 29, 1917, she and J. B. Hook, a pioneer rice grower, were married. Besides operating large tracts of rice land in the Rich vale and Nelson districts, and a number of orchard tracts. He died 15 years later on Dec. 28, 1932. "Mrs. Hook had always been particularly interested in music, and had sung at different music, and had sung at different music clubs in the Baptist Church, of which she was an active member; and had sung at different music clubs in the Baptist Church, of which she was an active member; and the Chico Art Club, in which she also took an active part. Mrs. Hook also belonged to the WCTU of Chico. "Her survivors include her four children, Chester E. Rose, Raleigh Rose and Mrs. Glen Cranach, all of Chico, and Mrs. Ethel Jones of Brogan, Ore. Six grandsons and 13 (or 18) great grandchildren survive as do two brothers, Issac Whiteley, of Palette, Idaho, and B. W. Whiteley, of Portland, Ore. "Funeral services will take place in the Brucie Funeral Home Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. following which entombment will take place in the Chico Mausoleum."- Contributed by Carolyn Dowd, January 8, 2021.
