Sackmann, daughter of Johannes and Magdalena (Nagel) Sackmann, was born Feb. 26, 1919, on a farm six miles east of Ashley. She started school in 1924 in a country school with Thusnilda Bertsch as her teacher. She completed school in 1932 and then helped on the family farm cooking for the farm help. She was united in marriage to George Rothfusz on Nov. 5, 1939, at Peace Lutheran Church, east of Ashley. They made their home on his parents' farm until the fall of 1942 when they took over the operation of the farm. They raised small grains and owned a large herd of Black Angus cattle. In the fall of 1956, they sold out and retired from raising cattle. They moved into Ashley and farmed from town for a number of years and retired in July of 1983. Edna enjoyed quilting, embroidery, sewing and gardening when she was able. For many years, she and her husband enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of a supper club when they would take turns at each other's home on a monthly basis. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley, also of WELCA and participated in church circles. Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Vossler of Edgeley, N.D., and Evangeline (Floyd) Kirkham of Billings, Mont.; one son, Tobias (Susan) Rothfusz of Eden Prairie, Minn.; one sister, Inez Salzer of Ashley; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Her parents, husband, three brothers and five sisters preceded her in death. Casketbearers will be Vaughn Salzer, Irvin Rothfusz, Gary Rothfusz, Calvin Rothfusz, Vincent Salzer and Emil Eberhart. Special music will be performed by The Ashley Men's Quartet. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley have been entrusted with the arrangements. Published in the Aberdeen News on 12/2/2004.
