May 16, 1939 - Carroll Daily Herald - E.H. Albers, 97, of Glidden, one of the earliest settlers of Carroll county, died at the St. Anthony Hospital about 8:30 Monday night. Mr. Albers had been brought to the hospital for treatment only that afternoon. He had lived in Carroll county for more than seventy years. Until the first of April, when he suffered an attack of influenza, Mr. Albers had enjoyed excellent health. Since that time he had gradually failed, being confined to bed part of the time. The body will be taken at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening from the Huffman Funeral Home to the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Cord Best southwest of Lanesboro, where it will repose until the time of the funeral. Short services at the Rest home at 1:30 Thursday afternoon will be followed by final rites at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale, and burial will be in the Lidderdale Cemetery. The Rev. R. Herrmann, to whose congregation Mr. Albers belonged, will officiate. Mr. Albers was born near Sande, in Oldenburg, Germany, April 14, 1812, a son of Nicholaus Friederich and Mary Margaret Albers. Coming to the United States in 1866, he located at Monticelo, Jones County, IA., where he resided for about two years before coming to Carroll county. He had lived in this county continuously since 1868. Mr. Albers was married in December 1870, to Anna Margaret Johnson, the ceremony taking place in Carroll county. They resided on their farm one and one-half miles north of Lidderdale until they retired thirty years ago to make their home in Lidderdale. Mrs Albers died Jan 16, 1929 and after her death Mr Albers continued to live in Lidderdale for some time. The last 3 years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs Cord Best. Mr. Albers was one of the county's genuine pioneers. He built the first house in the town of Lidderdale after the Chicago Great Western Railroad was constructed through there. However, he did not move into Lidderdale until some time later. Mr. Albers was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. His ninety-seventh birthday was celebrated April 14, when his children gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cord Best to honor him on the occasion. He is survived by two daughters and two sons: Mrs. Martin Emmick, Carroll; Mrs. Cord Best, Glidden; Ed Albers, Lidderdale, and John Albers, Lucan, Minn.; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One son, Frederick Albers, a Spanish-American War veteran, died July 18, 1935. Mr. Albers was the last of a family of five children. He was a member of the Carroll Daily Herald Three-Quarter Century Club.
