Sturm, age 89, of Carroll, Iowa, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, Iowa. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Thursday, June 18, 2009, at St. Mary Church in Auburn. The Celebrant will be Father Lawrence McCarty. Lectors will be Crystal Neumayer and Sarah Tjaden. Gift Bearers will be Angie Sturm and Kelli Carroll. Mass Servers will be Katie Sturm and Morgan Wollesen. Casket Bearers will be David Sturm, Eric Steinkamp, Adam Riedell, Brian Wilson, Matt Tjaden, Ryan Neumayer, and Mike Sturm. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Auburn with military honors conducted by the Auburn American Legion. Bugler will be Mike Sturm. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 P.M. Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 5 P.M. Wednesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Wednesday by the Parish. Mr. Sturm was born on June 9, 1920, at Templeton, Iowa, the son of Wolfgang and Frances (Hacker) Sturm. He spent his younger years in the Templeton community and attended Sacred Heart School and helped on the family farm. He entered the U.S. Army in December 1941 and served with the Fourth Infantry during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater receiving the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. On January 22, 1946, he was married to Mildred Wittrock at St. Augustine Church in Halbur with Father Herman Kramer officiating. The couple farmed near Templeton and Coon Rapids and in 1951 purchased their farm northwest of Auburn. Mr. Sturm was a grain and livestock farmer. The Sturm’s retired in 1987 and moved to their home in Carroll. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and long time member of St. Mary Parish at Auburn. Mr. Sturm enjoyed his family, farming, fixing things in his shop, and playing cards. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, JoAnn Riedell; a grandson, Jacob Riedell; sisters, Agnes Wiederin, Rose Wiederin, Sophia Nepple, Mary Riesberg, and Hilda Riesberg; and brothers, Leonard Sturm, and infant brother, Herman Sturm.
