Description	:	Edward Fickling (or E.A. Fickling) was born on his father's farm, 1-1/2 miles north of Trivoli on the Peoria-Burlington Wagon Road, in Peoria County, Illinois. He was the second child (out of ten) of Jacob and Susannah (Draper) Fickling, and the first one born on that farm; his elder brother, William H. Fickling "the 1st" was born in Danville, Illinois and died in 1864 when he was accidentally shot in camp during the Civil War while another Union soldier was cleaning his gun. "Ed" married Mary I. Shannon on 25 Dec 1871 in Henry County, Illinois. All of their 10 children were born in Henry County, near Cambridge. Eight of their children lived to adulthood. By the 7th of June 1900, Ed had moved his family to Yankton, Yankton Co, South Dakota, where he and his wife remained for the rest of their lives. It is interesting, though, that eventually all of his adult children ended up moving to other states: 1) Deela (Find A Grave Memorial# 43140141) married Edward F. Brown and eventually moved to Washington State. 2) Daisy/Daisee died before June 1900. 3) Asa (Find A Grave Memorial# 50770138) married twice, and moved to California. 4) Clara married Robert Murray and moved to Washington State. 5) William married Nola Arnold and ended up in Nebraska. 6) Jacob married Nell Jones and moved to Nebraska. 7) Anna died before June 1900. 8) Mary Ava married David Miller and ended up in Kansas. Some side notes: Edward Albert Fickling's son, Asa, was mayor of Long Beach, California from 1930-1933 and is ofter called "The Earthquake Mayor" because he was mayor during the 1933 earthquake. Edward's grandson, Forrest E. Fickling (son of Asa's son, Donald Forrest Fickling) was the author of the "Honey West" novels which later became a tv series. Edward A. Fickling was interested in his parent's family history. In 1898 he hand-wrote a genealogy chart listing demographic information for the family (see photograph attached to this memorial). In 2012, the framed chart still remains with family members, over 114 years later.
