He was the husband of Shirley T. Christophers. He was the husband of the late Rebecca N. Christophers. Born in Fall River, Mass., he was a son of the late George E. and Emma (Corbishley) Christophers. Mr. Christophers was a member of the Quarry Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Fall River, and All Saints Episcopal Church, Jensen Beach. He was a graduate of the Massachusetts Nautical School in 1940, now the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, one of the last graduating classes to sail on the square-rigged barque, "Nantucket." He sailed for the Moore-McCormack Lines. At age 24, he received his first command as master of the SS Becket Bend. He served in the merchant marine in World War II with the rank of captain. Mr. Christophers became a professional Boy Scout executive in 1948 in the Alfred W. Dater Council, Stamford, Conn. In 1953, he went to Lynn, Mass., to lead the Bay Shore Council, BSA. He returned to Stamford in 1966, and was selected to be scout executive of Greenwich Council in 1969. He retired from professional Boy Scouting in 1976 after 28 years of service. He had been a scout for more than 50 years. Because of his knowledge of square-rigged sailing vessels, he was a member of the Mayflower crew in 1964. He moved to Port St. Lucie and became commandant of the Saints & Sinners Yacht Club. He was commander of Flotilla 58, Fort Pierce, Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a master Mason, and a member of Rotary International. He was a member of the Elks and the Power Squadron. Besides his wife he leaves a sister, Ruth Cooksey of Rover, Ark.; a daughter, Joanne C. Carpenter of Hingham, Mass.; a son, Robert E. Christophers of Port St. Lucie, and five grandchildren. The funeral was held Friday at All Saints Episcopal Church. [published in The Providence Journal, Sunday, December 15, 1991]
