Read More	CENTERVILLE — Shirley Wilson (Thackeray) Christophers passed away at age 89 on Dec. 13, 2013, after a brief illness. She was born in New Bedford and grew up there with her parents, Alfred Ray Thackeray and Elsie Mae (Wilson) Thackeray. Her much-loved brother and his wife were Robert D. Thackeray of Marion, Mass., (deceased) and Janet L. Thackeray. During her marriage to Capt. Edward A. Christophers (deceased), the family lived in the Stamford, Conn., area as well as in Whitman and Nahant, Mass. In 1947 the couple traveled with their young daughter from Montreal, Canada, to Argentina, a five-month adventure on a converted liberty ship. Her husband was the senior officer. In later years he was an executive for Boy Scouts of America, and the couple enjoyed many summers at Camp Toquam in Connecticut and Camp Squanto in Carver, Mass. Shirley was an able partner who helped in many capacities. She was the recipient of the Thanks Badge from Girl Scouts of America for her years of volunteer service. In later years Shirley was the longtime companion of Edwin B. Athearn (deceased) of Martha's Vineyard. She was among those hired when the Cape Cod Mall first opened and worked there for over 20 years at Filene's department store. Home and family were the keystones of Shirley's life. She was the eleventh generation in her mother's family to have its roots in the sands of Cape Cod. She was active in the DAR, Mayflower Society, and various genealogical organizations. The highlight of Shirley's year was always the annual family reunion which was ongoing since before her birth. In recent decades, Shirley took pride in telling younger members of the family about their history and the relatives who lived in earlier times. Her stories brought life and color to names and dates, especially those of her grandparents, Jennie C. and Lorenzo P. Wilson who owned a grocery store on Main Street, Hyannis, in the early 1900s. Shirley leaves a much-loved daughter and son: Joanne C. Carpenter of Norwell, Mass., and Robert E. Christophers of Centerville, Mass. Also loved by her were her grandchildren: Scott R. Christophers and his wife, Kerry, who live in Hancock, N.H.; Amy Rebecca Carpenter and her husband, Ryan Davies, of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; Douglas R. Carpenter of Jamaica Plain; David A. Carpenter and his wife, Amy Mae, of Cohasset, Mass.; and Shawn Christophers and his wife, Brittany, of Yarmouth, Mass. She leaves nine great-grandchildren: Justyn and Tyler Christophers, sons of Scott and Kerry; Tobias and Levi Carpenter, sons of David and Amy Mae; and Rory, Liam, Cailey, Lazara, and Ember Noel Christophers, children of Shawn and Brittany. Cousins, nieces and nephews of several generations were also loved by Shirley as well. The family would like to thank Shirley's neighbors for their many acts of kindness over the years, especially Jane Degroot and Dan Dray and their sons, Nathaniel and Jon, who became family to her. Marty, her mailman, brightened her days and was part of the village that sustained her. Deserving of particular recognition is her personal care aide of the last several years, Jennie Suydam. Jennie was a dedicated caregiver who brought joy and love regularly. Interment of her ashes and a time to celebrate her life will be at a future time. The family requests that those wishing to make a donation in Shirley's memory and to honor her do so to the Perpetual Care Fund, Old Swan Lake Cemetery, P.O. Box 291, South Dennis, MA 02660.
