After receiving his education through the 8th grade at Greeley County School District #47, he began farming with his father and surrounding neighbors. On April 2, 1942, Ed entered the United States Army and served during WWII, where he participated in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, and Rhineland. For his service, he received the Purple Heart Award, Oak Leaf Clusters and four Bronze Service Stars.
