The deceased was one of twelve children of Mr. and Mrs. James Bennett and was born July 6th, 1831 at Foxhill Bank, Lancashire, England. On May 2, 1856 he married Miss Elizabeth Ellison. The deceased was one of twelve children of Mr. and Mrs. James Bennett and was born July 6th, 1831 at Foxhill Bank, Lancashire, England. On May 2, 1856 he married Miss Elizabeth Ellison. To this union one child, Elizabeth, (now Mrs. Shadbolt of Horton, Iowa was born. Mrs. Bennett passed away April 13, 1857. Mr. Bennett married his late wife, Janet Hume, on November 19, 1858. To this union eleven children were born, as follows; James M., Charles City; Mrs. Sarah Head, Plainfield, Iowa; Edward R. W., Carrville, Iowa; Miss Nellie Bennett at home; William C., deceased; Mrs. Mary McCoy, Vesta, Minnesota; William Carey, Endeavor, Wisconsin; Hume J., at home; Mrs. Cora Holroyd, Warner, Canada; Mrs. Ruth Jacobs, Miranda California and Lu Eva, deceased. He is also survived by thirty eight grandchildren and twenty seven great grandchildren. Mr. Bennett came to New York, together with a brother in 1848. From there he moved alone to Dubuque where he worked in a general store for the period of one year. He then went to Moundville, Wisconsin where he followed farming. On February 20, 1864, Mr. Bennett enlisted in Co. C., 23rd, Reg. Vol. Inf. at Portage, Wisconsin. During the war he kept an accurate diary, accompanied by maps. We learn from this report, that while in the service of the United States he traveled by railroad 803 miles, steamboat 5210 miles and by marching 812, or a total of 6825 miles. He was a most loyal soldier and did this task well, as he did any task in life. This history of Mr. Bennett rewrote in his seventieth year at which time a daughter had the work bound for him. He received an honorable discharge from the service January 6, 1866. Following the war, he moved overland by team and wagon with the family to Waverly, Iowa, in 1867, where they again followed farming. The year 1874 found them on a farm near Clarksville, Iowa. Here they remained until 1892 when they came to Charles City where they farmed until 1910 at which time they moved into town. Mr. Bennett has lived at his late home, 402 Harwood Street since 1913. During his long and useful life the departed one served various times as superintendent of Sunday Schools, township assessor and rural schoolmaster. The deceased was a devout member of the Baptist Church, having been baptized in the faith by Rev. J.M. Thurston in the Fox River at Moundville, Wisconsin April 1852. He was highly respected in the communities in which he resided. As the moonbeams stretch their long splendor across the surface of a stream beautifying it and causing it to dance with brightness, so did the life of Mr. Bennett radiate to the lives of those who knew him best, a fair-mindedness and light. To know him was to feel at once his strong spirit of Christianity. His fair mindedness; his unfailing belief in all that was good in life; his gentleness and his willingness to help all those perplexed or in sorrow, all combined to make him a praiseworthy individual and one whose name shall be forever on the lips of his friends. His wedded life was filled with much happiness, he having lived to celebrate his sixty third wedding anniversary on November 19, 1921. This is an event rarely attained. The funeral services were held at his late home Thursday at 12: o'clock, Rev. W.L. Anderson having charge. Interment was made at Clarksville, Iowa.
