Description	:	JANET (HUME) BENNETT Mrs. Janet Hume Bennett passed away July 3rd, 1929, at her late home, 402 Harwood Street, at the age of 89 years, 7 months, and 25 days. The deceased was one of four children. She was born at Hamilton, Scotland, November 8, 1839, and came to Portage, Wisconsin, with her parents in 1850. On November 19, 1858, she was married to Mr. Edward Bennett. To this union five sons and seven daughters were born. One daughter died at the age of eleven years and one son at the age of one year. Read More	JANET (HUME) BENNETT Mrs. Janet Hume Bennett passed away July 3rd, 1929, at her late home, 402 Harwood Street, at the age of 89 years, 7 months, and 25 days. The deceased was one of four children. She was born at Hamilton, Scotland, November 8, 1839, and came to Portage, Wisconsin, with her parents in 1850. On November 19, 1858, she was married to Mr. Edward Bennett. To this union five sons and seven daughters were born. One daughter died at the age of eleven years and one son at the age of one year. The remaining children are: Mrs. Lizzie Shadbolt, Plainfield, Iowa; Miss Nettie, Charles City, Iowa; Mrs. Mary McCoy, Vesta, Minnesota; William C., Endeavor, Wisconsin; Hume J., Charles City, Iowa; Mrs. Cora Holroyd, Warner, Canada; Mrs. Ruth Jacobs, San Jose, California. Mrs. Bennett is also survived by 38 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. The Bennetts moved from Portage, Wisconsin, to Clarksville, Iowa, in 1867, and from Clarksville to Charles City in 1892, where they both resided until the times of their passing. EIGHT WEEKS ON OCEAN It is interesting to note that the voyage from Scotland to America in 1850 took eight weeks. The trip from Wisconsin to Iowa in 1867 was made by team and consumed fifteen days. The same trip is now made in eight hours. The same brave pioneer spirit was especially shown during the Civil War when Mrs. Bennett remained at home and cared for five children, while Mr. Bennett served his country. He kept an accurate diary of his war days, accompanied by maps and this shows that he traveled a total of 6,825 miles. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers, four granddaughters acted as flower girls. The W.R.C. attended the funeral in a body. WAS A DEVOUT BAPTIST The deceased was a devout member of the Baptist Church, having been baptized in the faith by Rev. Thurston at the Baptist Church in Portage, Wisconsin, in May, 1857. After it became burdensome and almost impossible for the Bennetts to attend church services, due to failing health, they always held a little service of their own on Sunday mornings at the usual hour, in the quietness of their home. Mrs. Bennett was ever highly respected in the communities in which she lived. She was always a loving wife and a wonderful mother. She was busy, but had time, always, to help her neighbors and friends when fair mindedness, and the content that radiated from a good Christian life, shone at once from her and was a delight to behold. It will be remembered that the Bennetts celebrated their sixty third anniversary on November 19, 1921. They enjoyed an unusually long and an unusually happy married life. The funeral services were held at the late home Friday, July 5, at 2: p.m., Rev. Inman officiating.
