Stanley, 78, former chief of the Pine Bluff police department and for more than 18 years, superintendent of the Jefferson county hospital, died at 10:15 this morning at the family residence, 2400 South Olive, from illness of two weeks. His condition had been considered as improved until the sudden heart attack today. A native of Mississippi, he was born at Water Valley on April 29, 1873, a son of the late Everett Calhoun and Adeline (Pretty) Stanley pioneer residents of Mississippi. Mr. Stanley received his education in the schools of Water Valley and as a young man came to Pine Bluff where he had continued to reside. He first worked for the Pine Bluff (Motor) Company as a motorman and was later, engaged in the service of the city and county until his retirement. Mr. Stanley also served as a street commissioner for a number of years. He was married in 1902 to the former Pearl West of Double Wells by the late Squire Bridges, and to this union were born 11 children, of whom eight survive. In addition to his wife, Mr. Stanley leaves four daughters, Mrs. M. D. Baugh, Mrs. Goldie Peden, Mrs. Carl Childress of Pine Bluff and Mrs. Jack Decker of Fayetteville; four sons, Everett Stanley, Edward C. Stanley Jr., Horace Stanley and John Stanley of Pine Bluff; three grandchildren, Kay Janice Baugh, Faye Maurice Baugh, and Minnie Ella Baugh, all of Pine Bluff. Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 from the chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son Mortuary, with burial in the Fitzhugh cemetery.
