A memorial service was Thursday, September 5, 2019 at the Foothills Bible Fellowship Church with the Rev. Grubb officiating. Inurnment at Fairview Cemetery Lane, South Dakota. Edward Charles Vavra was born to Joe and Lena (McHenry) Vavra on April 14, 1930 in Weta, SD. Ed attended 2 years of school in Weta before moving to Jerauld County in 1938. He finished elementary school in 2 area schools before attending high school in Wessington Springs. In 1946 he started trucking with his dad in Faith, SD. In 1952 he was drafted to the Army to serve in the Korean War. He married Marilyn Kalkbrenner at the Zion Luthern church in Lane, SD on December 26, 1953 and made their home in Wessington Springs, where he worked for Patton Chevrolet before buying the Standard Oil station. In 1959 Ed went into trucking on his own, hauling livestock and delivering gas to nearly 40 stations for Flannery Oil, Co-op Oil, Cal Winter and Dienes Oil. He retired from trucking in 2000 at the age of 70. He is survived by his daughter Gloria of Wessington Springs; two sons Greg (wife Twila) of Wessington Springs; and Galen (wife Lisa) of Hartford along with three grandchildren; Jim Vavra of Wessington Springs, Melissa Vavra of Maine and Shawna (Nick) Taylor of Chester and 1 sister in law Darlene Kalkbrenner of Minnesota along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife Marilyn; one son Gary; daughter in law Cori; his parents; Sister Betty Brandenburg, Brother in law Mervyn Brandenburg. He enjoyed working on equipment in his spare time, taking naps and playing cards with his friends whenever he had a chance. Ed met many great people while in business and created friendships all across the state. There was never a time we traveled that he didn’t know someone. He was also a member of the Wessington Springs VFW and American Legion.
