Edward was born in January, 1857. He had four siblings: Elizabeth, Mary A, Alma and Henry. Elizabeth, Mary and Alma were born in New Jersey, while Edward and Henry were born in Pennsylvania. Both John and Mary were born in New Jersey in about 1820. Edward was born in January, 1857. He had four siblings: Elizabeth, Mary A, Alma and Henry. Elizabeth, Mary and Alma were born in New Jersey, while Edward and Henry were born in Pennsylvania. In 1860, the family was living in Wellersburg, Pennsylvania, in the southeast corner of Somerset County. John worked as a "furnace boss." Edward was 3 years old at this time. The 1870 Census lists the family as being in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. John worked in a foundry while Mary took care of the home and family. Daughters Mary and Alma were both schoolteachers. Edward was 13 years old. Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Edward went west to Colorado. In 1880, he was single, 23 years old and living in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado. His occupation is listed as a photographer. He would work the rest of his life in that profession. In the 1900 Census, Edward is still in Denver and still working as a photographer. His address was 3027 Downing Ave. He is listed as being married, but no wife is listed on the Census with him. He hasn't been located on the 1910 Census yet. Sometime between 1900 and 1920, his wife either died or they divorced. Edward moved to Kansas, where he married a widow, Marie Louise Obenland Hammerli. Mrs. Hammerli's deceased husband was Henry Hammerli, with whom she had five children. (Wilhelmina, Henry, Frieda, Harold and Vincent.) By 1920, Edward was a photographer who owned his own shop. He and Marie and her children were living in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas at the time. Edward and Marie owned their house clear of any mortgages. At this time, Edward had trained his stepson Henry as a photographer. Henry worked in the shop that his mother and stepfather owned. (Note: In this census, Edward is listed as Henry.) In the 1930 Census, Marie and Edward's home was worth $7,000. Only Maria's son Harold was living with them. He was single and still worked as a photographer in the family business. The name of Edward's first wife and any children of the marriage are unknown in July, 2009. Edward died on April 20, 1945 at the age of 88.
