Description	:	Maria was the daughter of Christian Carl Obenland and Marie Magdalena Kreher. She was born on October 11, 1875 in Burgstall, Neckarkreis, Wurttemburg, Germany. She was one of 10 children born to the couple. In the spring of 1884, Maria made the trip to the United States with her parents and 3 of her siblings. (One sister had died in Germany, the other 5 would be born later in the U.S.) Traveling with the family was Maria Louisa's aunt, Louise Johanna Obenland. She was born on October 11, 1875 in Burgstall, Neckarkreis, Wurttemburg, Germany. She was one of 10 children born to the couple. In the spring of 1884, Maria made the trip to the United States with her parents and 3 of her siblings. (One sister had died in Germany, the other 5 would be born later in the U.S.) Traveling with the family was Maria Louisa's aunt, Louise Johanna Obenland. The family left Antwerp, Belgium on the steamship, the Pennland. They traveled in steerage. The Pennland arrived in New York on May 9, 1884. From New York, the family made the trip to Kansas, settling in Clay County. Maria's father was a carpenter, while her mother kept house for the family. While in Clay County, 5 more children would be born to Maria's parents. In all, Maria had brothers Christian Carl Albert, Ernst William, Gustav Johannes, and Edwin Eugene. Her sisters included Friederika Wilhelmina, Emma Katharine and Frida Hulda. Her sister Katharine had died in Germany at the age of 2 months. On July 17, 1895, Maria married Henry Hammerli, a young man born in Iowa in February, 1866. Note: there are several ways of spelling Henry's last name: Hammerli, Hammerle and Hammerly. The 1900 Census has Maria and Henry living in Chapman, Ottawa County, Kansas. Henry was a farmer. Maria and Henry had 5 children. They were: Wilhelmina, born June, 1896; Henry, born October, 1898; Frieda, September, 1899; Harold, born in 1903 and Vincent, born in 1904. All of the children were born in Kansas. On January 29, 1908, Maria's husband Henry passed away. His death was due to appendicitis. By the time the 1920 Census was taken, Maria had married for the second time. Her second marriage was on January 28, 1914 to Henry Edward Christopher, a photographer who owned his own shop. They were living in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas at the time. Edward and Maria owned their house clear of any mortgages. Maria's children were all living with them. In the 1930 Census, Maria and Edward's home was worth $7,000. Only Maria's son Harold was living with them. He was single and worked as a photographer in the family business. Maria died on February 8, 1957 at the age of 81.
