Page 4 Edward Dietrich Wolken, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wolken passed to his heavenly reward last Monday, May 14th at 1:30 p.m. at the Mercy Hospital at Anamosa. Edward was born August 28th, 1908 near Langworthy Wayne Twp as son of Mr. Ben Wolken and his wife Minnie Friederike nee Wilken. Soon after his birth he was baptized by Rev C Mardorf. Edward was a strong and healthy child and the regularly attended Public school and the religious schools of his Lutheran church. Last winter he attended the Confirmation of Zions Lutheran church of Wayne when March 5th he met with another student going home from school. The horse which he was riding threw him and broke his leg. He was confined to bed. On this account he was privately confirmed in his home on Palm Sunday. His heart's desire was fulfilled to renew his baptismal vow and to become a conscious member of Christ's militant church. Easter Monday April 2nd Edward became very ill with the Grippe which caused Mastoid trouble. An operation seemed unadvisable by the attending physician and he reversed to such an extent that he was able to be up and around in the house. All gloom of his condition seemed to have disappeared. The future looked bright. Suddenly a second attack of the Grippe came Friday May 4th. The best of skilled physicians who attended him pronounced him suffering with a surgical mastoid. Rushed to the Mercy Hospital at Anamosa Sunday night May 6th he was operated upon shortly after midnight. The operation was a success and at times he gave hopes for recovery. But the Lord of Life and death had different plans with him. It became evident the disease had inflamed his brain tissues. All the skill and ability of the physicians, all the most tender care of the nurses, the strong love of the parents were unable to prevent the inevitable. He peacefully passed into heavenly home for which he had been well prepared and where he longed to be. His soul took flight to its mansion above last Monday 14th, at about 1:30 o'clock p.m. Edward was a true and obedient son, the pride of the family. He regularly attended the Sunday school of his Lutheran church. His age was 14 years, 9 months and 10 days. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wolken and his grandmother Mrs. Dietrich Wolken of Wayne Twp. and many other relatives. Funeral services were held Thursday May 17th, conducted by his pastor Rev J P Willma, at 1 o'clock at the home and final at the Wayne Lutheran Zions Church
