Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” May 18, 1955: Ed Gruwell Dies, Veteran Carpenter Edward “Ed” Gruwell, 83, of Ottumwa route 8, died Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. at the Ottumwa hospital. A resident of Wapello county all his life, he was well-known here as a carpenter. The son of Benedict and Sarah Gruwell, he was born March 18, 1867, in Wapello county. His marriage to Maude Van Clive [sic] took place in 1896. Mr. Gruwell was a member of the United Brethren church. He is survived by one son, Orville Gruwell of Ottumwa; one grandson, Carroll Gruwell of Ottumwa; one granddaughter, Mrs. Darlene Duke of Ottumwa; one brother, Frank Gruwell of Ottumwa; three half-sisters, Mrs. Edna Croft of Burlington, Mrs. Prude Cole of Chicago and Mrs. Della McFarland of Ottumwa; one step-brother, Dan Traul of Ottumwa route 8; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his wife in 1915, nine brothers and sisters and two half-brothers. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel in charge of the Rev. George King of the Assembly of God church in Confidence, Iowa. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery with nephews serving as pallbearers.
