The year of birth on her gravestone is 1898. Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” June 24, 1976: PRUDENCE COLE. Prudence Cole, 79, formerly of 116 S. Cherry, died at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Ottumwa Hospital. She was born in Wapello County Feb. 27, 1897, the daughter of Benedict and Sara O’Niel Gruwell. She had lived in Ottumwa for 22 years. She was a member of the East End Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was married to Joseph Cole, who preceded her in death in 1954. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Della McFarland of Ottumwa; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the East End Presbyterian with the Rev. Tom Barker officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Williams, G.H. Carr, Don Fiedler, Earl Fullmer, Dean Jacobs and Pearl Gates. A memorial has been established to the East End Presbyterian Church. Jay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
