Turk Was One Of Few Remain- ing Civil War Veter- ans; Died Sunday; Was 95 Years Of Age Funeral servies for E. H. Turk, one of five remaining Clarke county veterans of the Civil War were held this afternoon. Mr. Turk passed away Sunday, August 9, three years to the day after the death of his wife. The death of E. H. Turk, removes from the living probably the last member of the guard of honor who stood watch over the bier of Abraham Lincoln while the nation paid its sorrowing respects to the Great Emancipator at Springfield in 1865. One of his treasured posessions was a piece of crepe which he wore while on duty at the presidents bier. Mr. Turk was born on September 16, 1840, and had he lived until next month would have been 96 years old. When Kenosha, Wisc., was still a hamlet, Mr. Turk moved there with his parents and grew to manhood in that community. In 1861 he was married to Ann Edwards, also of Kenosha. Enlisting in the 146th Illinois infantry in 1864, Mr. Turk saw service in the great war, climaxed by his gaurd duty at the Lincoln services. For many years he was an active member of the G. A. R. in Osceola. In 1879 Mr. and Mrs. Turk left Wisconsin and moved to Great Bend, Kansas, and five years latter came to Clarke county where he purchased a farm two and a half miles southwest of Osceola, where a son, Frank, still resides. A number of years ago, as age forced them from active life, they moved to Osceola and in their comfortable home on East Webster street spent their declining years. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Turk. May, an only daughter, died while a young woman; Alfred died a few weeks ago. Surviving children are Frank and A. L. of Osceola and Burton of Kansas City. Services this afternoon were in charge of the American Legion with full military honors accorded the deceased veteran. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. R. Underwood of the M. P. church. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer.
