Although Mr. Barrett resided at Omaha at the time of his death, almost his entire life was spent at Dunlap. For many years he was in the mercantile business here, first with his father, and when the father died, the business was taken over by him and his brothers. He was also president of the Citizens State Bank of Dunlap, and was widely known for his keen business knowledge and ability. Although Mr. Barrett's residence was at Omaha of late years he was constantly in touch with his business interests here and scarcely missed a week in coming to Dunlap. All our efforts in securing a complete obituary have failed, but we hope to have it by next week. (From the Thursday, December 14, 1922 Dunlap paper) FUNERAL OF E. H. BARRETT HELD HERE LAST WEEK Founder of Citizens State Bank and Prominent Business Man of Dunlap Dead Seldom has Dunlap been so shocked and saddened as when on Friday evening, December 1, news was received of the sudden death at his home in Omaha of E. H. Barrett. Entering the room where Mort Barrett his nephew and Gerald, his son, had been conversing with him a while before, Mrs. Barrett found her husband stricken with apoplexy with the newspaper he had been reading still in his hand. The suddenness of his death came as a shock to his friends, many of whom had seen and talked with him earlier that day. On Thanksgiving he had motored to Lincoln with his son and daughter, Marjorie, to witness the Nebraska-Notre Dame football game. On Wednesday he was in Dunlap attending the funeral of the late John T. Hanigan, for whom he acted as pallbearer. His body was brought back to his old home, Dunlap, Monday morning and funeral services were held in St. Patrick's church. Father Hansen of Stuart, Iowa, for years pastor of St. Patrick's church and an intimate friend of the deceased, celebrated Requiem High Mass and preached the funeral sermon, speaking eloquently and in high praise of the life and character of the departed. The church was crowded with old acquaintances who had come to pay a last respect to one whom they had for years known as a true friend and neighbor. The body followed by a long procession of his friends was carried to its final resting place among his kin in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The pallbearers were W. J. Burke, Tom Gilmore, Missouri Valley; Dr. I. C. Wood, Patrick Grady, Omaha; E. T. Ryan, J. E. Caulfield, E. W. Houston and J M. Holland of Dunlap. Ed Barrett, as he was familiarly known among his countless friends was born in Wheatland, Iowa, March 8, 1861. As a child he moved with his parents, Michael and Rose Barrett, to Dunlap in 1868. After graduating from the High School in Dunlap and the Bryan and Stratton School of Commerce in Chicago, Mr. Barrett in 1878 entered the mercantile business of his father in Dunlap. The business grew rapidly and his father appreciated the interest and application of the son, and made him a partner under the firm name of M. Barrett & Son. Three years later, 1887, Mr. Barrett's brother, M. J. Barrett, joined the firm, which down to 1912 operated under the widely known name of M. Barrett & Sons. In that year M. Barrett retired from active interest and Ed, together with brother, incorporated under the firm name of the Ledden Co. The brothers retained their interest in the business down to the present year, when the Ledden Co. was dissolved and Ed and his brother retired from the busines! s established by their father in the pioneer days of Dunlap, and with which they had been associated from their boyhood. Though Mr. Barrett enjoyed years of success in the mercantile business, he did not confine his attention to that one field. In 1889 with associates he organized the First National Bank of Dunlap, and retained his interest there unti1 1894, when he withdrew to organize the Citizens State Bank of Dunlap, of which he was president at the time of his death. Mr. Barrett was uniformily successful in his business interests and his name and activities are intimately inter-woven with the development of the community in which he lived and of the much larger and more extensive territory of which in the pioneer days, Dunlap was the center. In the changes that have taken place through all these years, Mr. Barrett was not only a witness but also an actor on the scene. Dunlap's history is inseparably connected with his life and labor. Moving to Omaha with his family in 1914, he still retained active personal and business relations with his old home. Scarcely a week passed that I Ed. was not a visitor in Dunlap. A few years after his removal to Omaha, Mr. Barrett and family suffered the heavy loss of their eldest son, Dave, which took place while he was serving in the naval department during the war. But despite his keen sense of 1oss in the death of his son, Mr. Barrett bore up admirably under the circumstances. In Omaha, Mr. Barrett made friends with the same facility that he made them in Dunlap. Nor were they confined to business associates alone. A broad sympathy had kept him in close touch with his fellow man and hence it was that people from every walk of life, hearing of his death, gathered at his home to pay their respect to a faithful friend. He took an active interest in national and inter-national questions and his independence of thought and action prompted him to decisions and sympathies not common of those of his business station. His faculty for making friends was found in his willingness at all times to be of some service. His friends were numerous but the favors he granted were scarcely less so, and in bestowing a favor he did it in a way that endeared him to the one befriended. He was never too burdened to lend a helping hand to the deserving and never too busy to give counsel to those who sought his advice. With his big, charitable heart and his broad Christ! ian sympathies, it is little to be wondered that he made so many friends or that those friends should feel in his demise a real sense of personal loss. In 1892 he was married to Jessie Dean and to this union three children were born: Marjorie M. Barrett, David D. Barrett and Gerald M. Barrett. Though Mr. Barrett will be missed by all who knew him, the loss occasioned by his death will be fully realized only by his immediate family and kin. Among these are his widow, one son, Gerald, and one daughter, Marjorie, all of Omaha; also the following brothers and sisters: . M. J. Barrett, of Omaha; J. F. Barrett, Mrs. M. C. Dally, Dunlap; Mrs. J. E. Smith, Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Wm. Beatty, Omaha; and Mrs. F. P. Gallagher of San Francisco, Cal.
