Fletcher EDWARD HENRY TAYLOR 1835 - 1907 Edward Henry Taylor was born in Ballston, Saratoga County, New York, February 24th, 1835. His parents were Luzerne Curtis Taylor and Hannah (Platner) Taylor, Edward was the 2nd child in a family of fourteen children. On November 26, 1855 he married Eliza O'Bryan, daughter of John and Rhoda O' Bryan. They were married in New York, and soon after their marriage they moved with his parents to Fon du Lac, Wisconsin. Four years later they moved to Minnesota and settled near the present site of Wells. They came by covered wagon, driving horses, cattle and pigs with them. As one of the pioneers, he was closely identified with the early struggles of Minnesota, and as one of the state militia took an active part in all the State's conflicts with the Indians. At the time of the Indian massacres he was a member of the 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers. In 1862 he enlisted in the 147th Illinois Infantry and served his country to the close of the Civil War in 1865. In 1876 Mr. Taylor move to Nebraska, arriving in November in locating for the winter at Calamus, the trading post growing up in joining Fort Hartsuff on the Southeast. The following spring the Taylors moved to the farm where Elyria is located, the house site being where present Catholic Church St. Marys now stands. Farming there a year, then follow the "up river" trail, and establish their home in the Kent Community just west of the trading post operated by A Kritzmiller. This is about one mile west of Kent. Kent being the first seat of government in the Loup Territory. They live in Kent until about 1896 when they sold the farm to David S Cooper, after enduring all the hardships and trials of the early settlers. The house they built is still in use as a residence, on the farm owned by Vera and Buck Kraus, of course it has been remodeled and added to over the years. But they do still use the same windows, doors (inside), latches and chimney. The stove pipe does not go through the floors(2)for it did heat the upstairs and also the basement this way but they use the same chimney itself today. When the county seat was moved to a little settlement about 5 miles west of Kent, Mr. Taylor was honored by having this village named "Taylor" for him. The Taylors made their home almost constantly in Loup County, Nebraska. He was extensively interested in the cattle business in the western part of the State, with his sons for a number of years. His wife Eliza died of cancer on June 26, 1901 and is buried at Kent Cemetery. In 1902 he married Maria Elvira (Joiner) Cole, they then made their home in Sargent, Nebraska. She died March 2nd 1930. He died as a result of the fall from the hayloft into the floor of the barn below. He had just sat down his lantern to open a bale of hay and for some unexplained cause he fell. He died August 23, 1907. Burial was it Kent Cemetery. He was 72 years old. He and Eliza had five children: May Louiza born 1857; Jay R. born 1864; Kitty Bell born 1867; Luzerne Curtis born 1869; and Edward Henry Jr. Born 1872. Eliza and Parris O'Bryan (the husband of Edward's sister Eunice) were brother and sister. There were other children in the O'Bryan family.
