BURCHELL DIES OF INJURIES Frightened Team Drag Him Across Field Under Disc This community was saddened and shocked last Saturday morning to hear of the untimely and accidental death of Edward Burchell, living five miles north and one mile east of Minden. He was out in the field discing and it is supposed that in some manner he lost his seat on the machine and was thrown in front of it, his right leg catching in the levers which operate it. The team became unmanageable and dashed away across the fields and into the barnyard, dragging Mr. Burchell and crushing him beneath the disc as it bounded over the ground. Nearly every bone in his body was broken, but his heavy clothing prevented his being cut to any extent. He died three-quarters of an hour later. He had been out in the fields but about an hour and a half when his wife saw the team with the disc dash past the window into the barnyard. Supposing the team had broken away from Mr. Burchell, she ran out and started to unhitch the team when she noticed the body of her husband beneath the machinery. She managed to free him, neighbors were called, and the doctors were called, but nothing could be done to save the injured man. He was unable to talk and died without telling how the accident occurred. Edward Burchell was born in Ireland, on December 9, 1864, and died at his home near Minden, Nebraska, on March 10, 1923, at the age of 58 years, 3 months and 1 day. He grew to manhood in his native country following the pursuits of farmer and fisherman. On October 28, 1905, he was married to Miss Nellie Milward and to this union were born eight children, Sarah Ann, Ailene Mary, Edward, Rollin, Doris May, Retha and Marvin are living, one child having died in infancy. In December, 1911, Mr. Burchell brought his family to America and settled on the farm in Kearney County where they are now making their home.T he deceased was a member of the Episcopal church, loved and respected by his neighbors and all who knew him. He was industrious and thrifty, a good provider and was just preparing to enjoy the fruits of a modest success when he was returned home to his Maker in response to the inscrutable ways of an all-wise providence. He leaves to mourn his going, his beloved wife, seven children, three brothers, one sister and a host of friends here and in his native land. After a short service at the home last Monday afternoon, consisting of a song, "My Faith Looks up to Thee" by the choir and a short prayer, the funeral services were held in the Liberty Baptist church at 2:30 conducted by the Rev. J.R. Bucknell of the Minden Methodist church. The choir sang "The Home of the Soul," "Does Jesus Car," and "Abide With Me". The text was John 14:1-18. "Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God, believe also in me." "I will not leave you comfortless" The floral pieces were many and beautiful. These together with the large concourse of people that filled the church and followed the remains to their last resting place, spoke silently, yet eloquently, of the high esteem with which the departed was regarded in the community where he was known by everyone as "uncle Ned,' and was mute, yet beautiful, expression of the tender sympathy in every heart for the breathed family.
