For the past three years, he had lived in the Osmond and Creighton nursing homes. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at St. Ludger Catholic Church with the Rev. Huigens, a retired Creighton businessman died Wednesday, Dec. 9 at the Creighton Care Centre at the age of 84. For the past three years, he had lived in the Osmond and Creighton nursing homes. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at St. Ludger Catholic Church with the Rev. James Fitzgerald officiating. Burial was in St. Ludger Cemetery. Edward John Huigens was born Aug. 26, 1886 at Creighton to Mr. and Mrs. John Huigens. He attended rural school and Creighton High School. He worked as an apprentice barber under the late Elmer Finson and at the age of 18 bought the Finson shop. He operated it until about 1930, when he built a new shop on the same location. He barbered continuously until his health began to fail about five years ago. Mr. Huigens married Tracy Seiler on Feb. 8, 1913 at St. Ludger Catholic Church. Seven children were born to them. In his younger days, he was active in civic affairs, being a member of the Volunteer Fire Department, Creighton Concert Band and Lions Club. Surviving are his widow; four sons, James of Sioux City, Ia.; Wilfred of Clarinda, Ia.; Fred of Plainview and Dean of Laverne, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Mary Ann) Hamilton of Plainview and Mrs. Arnold (Betty) Timm of Norfolk; 20 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one brother, Henry, of Creighton and four sisters, Miss Ann Huigens, Mrs. Edw. Mattern and Mrs. Ernest Tharnish of Creighton and Mrs. Ivan King of San Antonio, Tex. One son, two brothers and his parents preceded him in death. ...The Creighton News 17 Dec 1976 ****** Wednesday morning at six o'clock in the Catholic Church, Father Windolph performed the ceremony which made Nina L. Hanford and Edward J. Huigens man and wife. They were attended by the groom's sister, Anna and brother, Joseph. After an excellent wedding breakfast at the home of the bride's parents, they boarded the morning passenger for a weeks honeymoon trip to Omaha, Lincoln and other Nebraska points. These young people are an integral part of our rising young citizenship and are known by all. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Huigens and was born on a farm west of town. Coming here with his parents, he bought Finsons barber Shop and by steady work has learned the business and is now running an up to date place and is doing very well. He is a young fellow that it gives us much pleasure to be able to recommend. The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Hanford and is known by every person in Creighton young and old. None knows her except to say that she is a graceful vivacious and worthy young lady and wish her the fullest measure of success and happiness.
