Description	:	Edward Reiss was born in West Preussen, Germany, August 24, 1866. He came to this country when 16 years of age, settling with his parents on a farm one and one-half miles north and two miles east of Kramer. Mr. Reiss entered into the estate of holy matrimony with Anna Henning the 16th day of March 1893. Shortly afterward, he and his newly wedded wife moved to a farm about eight miles northeast of Crete. Read More	Edward Reiss was born in West Preussen, Germany, August 24, 1866. He came to this country when 16 years of age, settling with his parents on a farm one and one-half miles north and two miles east of Kramer. Mr. Reiss entered into the estate of holy matrimony with Anna Henning the 16th day of March 1893. Shortly afterward, he and his newly wedded wife moved to a farm about eight miles northeast of Crete. This was his home until his death. Here also all his children were born: five boys and one girls, all of whom survive him. They are: Mrs. Fred Gerbig of Martell; Henry, Louis, and Edwin of Crete; Benjamin and Reinhold at home. He is survived also by his wife; his mother, aged 96 years and who has made her home with him for the past 21 years; five grandchildren; six brothers: Ferdinand and Otto of Apache, Oklahoma; Fred of Wilcox, Nebraska; William of Monowi, Nebraska; Herman of Crete; Gustav of Neleigh, Nebraska; four sisters: Mrs. Anna Kuhlmann of Campbell, Nebraska; Mrs. Hedwig Daniels of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Bertha Woelke of Enid, Oklahoma; Mrs. Minnie Henning of Crete. He died in December 1904. Mr. Reiss died last Wednesday afternoon, February 21, 1934 in the Lincoln General hospital at the age of 67 years, 5 months, and 28 days. He was troubled with diabetes for a number of years. This, with other various complications, which necessitated two operations in Nov 1932 so weakened him that he never fully recovered. The deceased was a member of the Lutheran church all his life. He was baptized when a week old by a Lutheran pastor in Germany and confirmed in the Lutheran faith when 14 years old. After his arrival in this country, he became a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran church at Kramer, where he was a faithful member until his death. Through a long period of intense, painful suffering, the departed brother learned the truth, "We must through much tribulation, enter into the kingdom of God," Acts 14, 22. However a time of suffering is also a time of preparation for eternity. While lying in pain upon his death bed, he constantly prepared himself to meet his God in humiliation and prayer, in the use of God's Word and the Sacrament. The latter he received shortly before his death. For a long time it was his hope that through the will of God, he should regain his health. When this seemed impossible, he was ready to die. There was no fear in him at the approach of death, because he had found Christ, the Savior. For he who has found Christ through faith and repentance, can say with the psalmist: "Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me," Ps. 23, 4. Guard us waking, guard us sleeping And when we die, Let us in Thy mighty keeping, All peaceful lie. When the trumpet's call shall wake us, Do not Thou, blest Lord, forsake us, But to rein in glory take us to Thee on high! Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, February 24 at the home and then at St. John's Ev. Lutheran church at Kramer. Rev. Albert H. Cholcher, family pastor, officiated.
