He came to America when he was 9 years old, lived in Syracuse, NY a short time then the family moved to Manchester NH. While at school he delighted his school mates with his pencilings. He had inherited imitative powers and intuitive feelings for art. Some of his picures of farm-yards and other rural scenes, done while an untaught boy of twelve are still preserved by the family. Though, of necessity crude, the are strikingly natural in tone and action. He went to Europe in 1860 and studied at the Royal Academy in Municy and Dusselorf, mostly under the tuition of Stennan an original and powerful painter of landscapes. In 1863 he married Miss Ruth Ann Porter, a lady who was held in high esteem as a successful teacher in the public schools of Manchester and they settled in Boston. He painted both landscapes and portraits and always found purchases and sitters without solicittion. His portraits were uniform good likenesses, for no man was more accurate in the observations of portraits, or more faithful in their reproduction. His genius of patience and attention and his power of concentration kept him alike from the sentimental and the over emphatic style of treatment, It was wonderful to see how he could look into a faded photograph and discern character and lineaments of a deceased subject. Some of his pictures made in way that were almost startling to friends who could scarely believe that the painter had never met the original amoung the living. Though exceling in portraits he was a master of landscape, figure, fruit and animal painting. In 1870 he went abroad again with his wife and spent a year in devote study. On his return his work began to exhibit a style and vigor beyond the expectations of this best friends. His portraits of men of character and eminence were greatly admired. Among them maybe mention Judges Hoar, Aldrich Allen and Bacon. He was very happy in pictures of childhood, combining natural expression with the intuitive grace setting off the figures with charming freshly studied backgrounds. He was a well known artist in the United States, mostly for his landscapes and drawing of cattle. However, in linking to different family members that were his subject at the time one can see he had tremdenous talent. The portrait of his wife Ruth captures the love she had for her husband along with her amazing beauty. His mother's portrait captures her gentleness and calm of a woman who had lost many children and still able to maintain dignity and strength. His father's portrait, show a man with self respect and the confidence one would want in a physician. He also did many portraits and those of Frederick Symth, Alonzo Smith and his wife. His most famous portrait is of the Bride which sold in 1972 for $10,000. That was only the 2nd painting to ever been made available to the public, assuming the remained must be in private collections or with family members. He studied in Europe, New York and Boston, he and his wife settled there and opened his studio. His belovd wife died in 1878 an he toured Europe for a year. He returned and remarried in May of 1880, that marriage was shortlived. He unfortunately had a stroke and died in his 40's. January 9, 1881 he is buried with his wife Ruth, they are buried together in the Custer Family lot. This and a few portraits posted are the few that the Manchester Historic Society has.
