Pastor Walter Kukonnen officiated with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. Casket bearers and honorary casket bearers were his fourteen grandchildren. Edward LaVerne Bylund, the son of John Earl and Flossie Edna Harvey Bylund, was born February, 20, 1925, at his parents' farm home in Guthrie County and died April 10, 2002, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon at the age of 77 years, 1 month, and 26 days. Dr. Wolfe traveled by horse and buggy from Coon Rapids, during a blizzard, cutting fence wire, to make it to the farm for his birth. Ed was baptized and confirmed on November 21, 1948 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. He attended Orange Township country school in Guthrie County and Viola Consolidated School in Viola Township. In November of 2000 Ed was awarded an honorary high school diploma from Governor Vilsack. At the age of 17 he left school (as his mother signed permission to join the Navy as long as he didn't serve on a submarine) and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Bright. Ed and crew were lucky to survive two kamikaze attacks on their ship. On April 27, 1946, he was honorably discharged and returned to the Audubon are to work as a farm hand. On December 23,1945, (while on leave from the Navy) Edward was united in marriage to Rose Marie Hansen at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon. Milo Bylund, Ed's cousin, and Violet Hansen, Rose's sister, were attendants. To this union there were seven children born. Larry, Kathy, Karen, Mary Anne, Cheryl, Carole, and Janet. Ed started farming at Roland in 1955, also raising turkeys. In 1959 he moved his family to Audubon county to the Bonwell farm (which they purchased in 1963 (on a Friday the 13th) in Viola Township, one half mile east of Viola Center. In the late 60's, he drove the Audubon Community School bus for twelve years. During his farming years, Ed raised cattle, hogs, turkeys, and row crops. In 1990, Ed retired from farming. In 1994, Ed and Rose moved to their new home in Audubon where he still enjoyed his woodworking and frequent trips back to the farm. Ed was a lifelong member of V.F.W. Post 1119, Audubon, a life member of American Legion Post 120, Audubon, and a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon. Ed's hobbies included fishing, planting trees, gardening, and woodworking. He made many wood (walnut) items for his children and grandchildren from trees that were from the Viola farm. Ed had a special love for his family, his family dog, Henry, and his horse, Jackie Meg. Preceding Ed in death were his parents, John Earl and Flossie Bylund, and his brother Raymond Earl Bylund, sister-in-law Miriam Bylund, and brother-in-law Glenn Meek. He is survived by his wife, Rose of Audubon, his seven children and fourteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren; his sisters, Edna Bell of Red Oak and Ida Meek of Mentor, OH, his brother Orvil Bylund and wife, Ione of Coon Rapids, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
