Behounek, 79, of Grinnell, IA, died Tuesday night, January 10, 1989, in Grinnell General Hospital, Grinnell, IA. Funeral services for Mr. Behounek were held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, January 13, 1988, in the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn, IA. Interment was in the Brooklyn cemetery. Edward Leo Behounek, son of Frank and Mary Polka Behounek, was born March 3, 1909, on a farm in Poweshiek County, south of Chelsea, Iowa. He attended rural schools and as a young man he was interested in music and played with dance bands and for concerts. On May 16th, 1936, he was united in marriage to Verna E. Carlsen in Marshalltown, IA. They farmed for 30 years north of Brooklyn and in 1966 they sold their farm and moved to Grinnell. He worked as a custodian at Grinnell College until retired in 1974. They moved to Brooklyn for a few years and returned to Grinnell in 1978. After he retired his main hobby was fishing. Mr. Behounek is survived by his wife, Verna; one son, Darly, of Grinnell; one sister, Mrs. Louise Upah of Cape Coral, Florida; three nieces, Mrs. Darlen Sedlacek of Tama, Ms. Janice Upah of Elgin, Illinois, and Mrs. Norma Jean Rieck of Albert lea, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William, and one sister, Anna Stadler. Source: Nevenhoven Funeral Home records.
