Edward Neil "Bud" Casey was the author of "Grassroots and Clippings from the Hills" which began with the following verse from Psalms 103:15-16: "As for man, his days are as grass: As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; And the place thereof shall know it no more." Bud was an avid genealogist, and his unpublished book tells the story of his family and his ancestors. These ancestors include Thomas Blossom who set sail on the Speedwell which was bound for America with the Mayflower in 1620, but which proved unseaworthy and returned to England, though Blossom arrived in America in 1629 on a later voyage. Edward and Samuel Fuller, father and son, and passengers on the Mayflower in 1620, were also ancestors of Bud on his father's side, as was Edward Fitz Randolph who arrived in Massachusetts Colony in 1630 and whom genealogists have determined was a descendant of Roger Bigod, a Magna Charta surety in 1215. On his mother's side, Jean Jacques Bonnett and his wife were Huguenots from the Palatinate who settled near Philadelphia. Michael Casey and Patrick McKeown, both Irish immigrants, arrived in America in the early 1800's and settled in what is now West Virginia. Bud's Vincent ancestors descend from Jean Vincent, who with his brother Francois, had been a "man of the sea" and who had been captured by Spaniards from whom he had escaped to New York, after which he settled on Manhattan Island, married and established a family. The stories of these early ancestors and many of their descendants are collected here for future generations. In his Preface, Bud recalls the years that he labored to discover his heritage, tramping through cemeteries, turning the pages of aging record books, and squinting at whirring microfilm readers.
