Read More	James Edward "Jim" Casey, born 18 Nov 1901 in Doddridge County, West Virginia, was the youngest son of John Meredith Casey and Tabitha Rosella (Flint) Casey and the eighth of nine children born to his parents. Both of his parents were born and raised in the Harrison/Doddridge County area of West Virginia. While both of John Meredith's parents were the offspring of immigrants from Ireland, Tabitha Casey's parents both had deep ancestry in the United States with one branch of her mother's family having proven Mayflower passenger ancestry. Jim's father's birth pre-dated the Civil War and the separation of West Virginia from Virginia in 1863. While Jim's grandfather had initially worked on the construction of the railroad when he first immigrated, he eventually settled down in Harrison County, WV, as a farmer. In turn, Jim's father earned a living for his own family as a merchant and farmer. John Meredith Casey, Jim's father, passed away after a short illness when young Jim was only four years old. At this time, the family's nine children ranged in age from 23 years old to less than one month old. All of the children were still in residence at the family home in Doddridge County, WV, when their father died. To support the family, Tabitha Casey maintained the farming operations with the help of the children, and the older Casey boys left school early and contributed much of their earnings to the family's welfare. The boys would continue to provide support to their mother for the rest of her life, and after ownership of the family farm passed from Tabitha to one of her sons, Tabitha continued to live at the farm until she moved to live with her youngest daughter. Jim Casey attended the local public schools in Doddridge County. The 1910 U.S. Census lists James E. Casey as a student, age 8, living with his family in the Greenbrier District of Doddrige County. His four older brothers were working as laborers or oilfield workers, though the younger two continued to attend school. The 1920 U.S. Census indicates that Tabitha Flint was self-employed as a farmer, and that three of Jim's older brothers (ages 32, 27 and 24) and three of his sisters continued to live at the family home, while James E. Casey, age 18, was listed as a student who could both read and write. On 24 Dec 1928, Jim Casey married the beautiful Mabel Elizabeth Vincent, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Bonnett) Vincent, in Harrison County, WV. They settled in Salem, WV, at 114 Valley Street and had two children, Edward Neil ("Bud") Casey and Connie Eileen Casey. Connie died as a child, and a memorial library was established in her honor at the Salem Methodist Church. Bud Casey attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and became a Navy officer, ultimately retiring in Florida. After working as a mail carrier early in his marriage, Jim Casey became a Parole Officer for the State Probation & Parole Office. During their later years of life, Jim and Mabel lived in Salem, WV, near Jim's brothers & sisters, including Nathan Lee, Pete, Guy, and Iva. James Edward Casey passed away at Salem, West Virginia, on 27 Nov 1973. He was survived by his widow, Mabel Casey, and his son, Bud Casey.
