Description	:	Edward Robert Mattix, 86, of Great Falls, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2014 of natural causes. A memorial service in honor of his life will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at Christ United Methodist at 10:00 a.m. with military honors provided by the Montana Army National Guard and VFW Post 1087. Burial will follow at Philbrook Cemetery just west of Hobson, MT. Edward was born on November 28, 1927 in Plains, MT to Lewis H. Mattix and Evelyn Lee Hungate. He graduated from Hot Springs High School after which he enlisted in the United States Army. Ed is a veteran of WWII and served his country in the Korean War as well. He spent his final 10 years in the 120th Fighter Group with the Montana Air National Guard. He later went to Western Montana College where he received his Bachelor's degree in Math/Science and P.E. after which he continued on to the University of Montana and earned a Master's degree in Guidance and School Administration. While attending Western Montana College, Ed met and later married his beautiful and loving wife Patricia Phillips. They were blessed with two children, Joyce and Marc. In 1952, Ed began his life long career in teaching (34 years) in Great Falls. He taught Math, coached sports and was a counselor prior to being named Principal of East Jr. High School in 1969. He served in that capacity until 1981 and then took position as Principle at West Jr. High School until his retirement in 1984. Though Edward was passionate about his family and career, when time allowed, he certainly enjoyed a variety of hobbies; fishing, hiking, rafting, photography, golf, bowling, reading, travel, RV trips, and was a sports enthusiast. Ed also spent some time socializing with the Hardy Boys and Old McDonald's coffee group. Ed is survived by his daughter, Joyce Byrne; son, Marc Mattix; brother, Delbert Mattix of Spokane, WA and three beautiful grandchildren; Amanda Byrne, Tyler Byrne and Katie Mattix; as well as three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Mattix; loving parents Evelyn and Lewis Mattix; brother, Charles and sisters, Roberta and Sandra. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 911 W 5th Ave, Spokane, WA 99204.
