Walter Nun was born to Anton and Anna (Sieber) Nun on Sept. 23, 1911 at Ohiowa, Nebraska. He was baptized in infancy and was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of Ohiowa. He attended country school and graduated from Ohiowa High School in 1928 and from the Lincoln School of Commerce of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1930. He was united in marriage with Lucile M. Bartels of Tobias, Nebraska on Jan 30, 1940. This union was blessed with two daughters and one son. (Catherine Retzlaff of Montverde, Florida, Richard Nun of Austin, Texas and Jane Schalk of Bedford, Texas. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ute, Iowa where he served as Elder, Chairman and Adult Bible Class leader of the congregation. He was a delegate to the Synodical Convention in New York in 1957. He served as Iowa District West of the LCMS on several committees and served as Chairman and Treasurer of the District Board of Directors for twelve years. He was a member of the International Lutheran Laymen's League and served on several committees in the local club and served as the District Secretary, Treasurer and President. On the International LLL level, he served on the "Round Table Committee" and served as Chairman of the International Convention held in Des Moines, in 1980. His chosen career was in the Banking and Financial field with his first employment at the National Bank of Commerce in Lincoln, Nebraska. Later he was employed by the Lytton Savings Bank of Lytton, Iowa, Pioneer Credit Cooperation of Fairmont, Minnesota, and the First National Bank of Wilmont, Minnesota. His career was interrupted in 1943 while with the First National Bank when he was called to serve his country in the United States Army. He served his country two and a half years, 20 months of which were served in New Guinea and the Phillipines. He received an honorable discharge in Jan. 1946 and returned to Worthington, Minnesota to rejoin his wife and daughter who resided there during his absence. In Aug. of 1946, he moved his family to Ute, Iowa where he assumed control of the Ute State Bank. He remained with the Ute State Bank until his retirement in Sept. 2000. He was appointed by the Governor to the Iowa Banking Board and served four years. In his local community he served as City Clerk, member of the Ute Consolidated School Board Directors, Secretary of the Ute Commercial Club and the Ute Development Corporation. He served on the county level as a member of the Compensation Committee, the Civil Service Commission, and the Planning and Zoning Commission. He also served as a member of the Board of Governors for the Iowa West Walther League Summer Camp Association (Camp Okoboji) for forty years. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Eventide Lutheran Home for the Aged in Denison, Iowa for 38 years. He was member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Ute. Walter is mourned by his wife, Lucille of Onawa; children, Catherine (Nun) and Vernon Retzlaff of Montverde, FL, Richard Nun, daughter-in-law, Sandy Nun of Austin, TX and Jane (Nun) and Ron Schalk of Bedford, TX; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to: Concordia University, Seward Nebraska; Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, Iowa; Camp Okoboji LCMS, Milford, Iowa and Lutheran Hour Ministries, St. Louis, Missouri.
