On October 28, he was stricken with paralysis at the home of Anton Tronrud above Melville. The entire right side was affected, and his speech. He had never fully regained the latter, though able to walk about. Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Dora Brannin; three children, Lewis Brannin, foreman of the W. H. Donald ranch at Melville; Lt. James E. Brannin head of the army postal service in Greenland, who has been here the past three weeks, and Mrs. Thelma Cockerell of San Francisco, who came with her daughter Elaine 10 days ago. Five brothers and fours sisters are: Sidney Brannin, Port Orchard, Wash.; Gus, Dick, Barney, and Crawford Brannin, Melville; Mrs. Luela Schroeder, Los Angeles; Mrs. Alice Tucker, Juneau, Alaska; Mrs. Anita Ward, Melville. There are four granchildren. Ed Brannin had lived and enjoyed a long and colorful life. He was born March 24, 1873, at Silver City, N. Mex., one of 13 children of Stanton S. and Guadalupe Brannin. The father received the first homestead patent granted in New Mexico. In 1894, when Ed was 21 the family moved by wagon train to Utah, taking with them 300 horses, 100 burros, and 940 angora goats. Drouth on the Little Colorado, worse as they proceeded north, compelled them to turn most of the horses and burros loose to shift for themselves in the hope that they might return for a roundup but this never occurred. During their first winter in Utah, most of the goats were lost in a blizzard. The present goat herd at the Brannin ranch in the Crazy mountains stems from the survivors of that storm. They were the first of their breed brought into Montana. In 1896, the family came from Annabelle, Utah, to Silver, Mont., a mining camp near Helena, living there until 1902 when they came to Sweet Grass to locate near Melville. Ed Brannin and Dora Overhuls, daughter of a pioneer merchant at Grey Cliff, were married in Big Timber in August 1905. They lived at Melville until his election to the office of sheriff of Sweet Grass county. He served from January 1, 1923, to December 31, 1932. During the latter half of the last year of his 10 years of service, an incident occurred which perhaps was indirectly responsible for the condition which brought about his death. On August 24, Brannin and his undersheriff, Frank S. Whitsel, were called to Bridger Canyon to look for a man named Sam C. Reigel who had left the Teddy Thompson ranch, leaving a note which indicated he would dispose of himself. The two thought they were looking for a dead man. Following his tracks, they proceeded a mile and a half up Blind Bridger when suddenly they were fired upon from above. Whitsel fell in his tracks, killed instantly. Brannin jumped for the brush and received a shot in the back which shattered a rib and passed clear through a lung and out. He made his way down to their car only to find that it was locked and the keys were in Whitsel's pocket. Then he got to a ranch and was brought to town. Oscar A. Fallang took charge of the office for him for the remainder of the year. A posse next day found Reigel dead behind a rock. He had blown the top off his head apparently immediately following the killing of Whitsel.
