Shaw, for many years one of the community's best-known and respected residents. He passed away at his home here July 14, the funeral services being held from the Paul Mortuary, July 16. Deceased was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, January 3, 1847. He was 83 years of age at the time of his death. His was a most active life from beginning to end, full of real accomplishments and service to others. Following his boyhood in the east, Shaw came to California in 1869. He settled in Mariposa county, where he engaged in the stock raising business. He retired in 1884 and moved to Pacific Grove, leaving a wife circle of friends in the northern part of the state, many of whom are still living and will regret to learn of his passing. In Pacific Grove, Shaw married Mary Ella Prouty, in 1894. He joined the local Methodist Episcopal church in 1896 and was an active member for the remainder of his life. Expressing the heart-felt appreciation of the local congregation, Rev. James Whitaker, active minister of the church, paid eloquent tribute when he officiated at the funeral services. Shaw had enjoyed vigorous health for the 36 years that he resided here. He was a familiar figure about the local streets and at the local recreation grounds. He was known by everyone and highly admired and respected by all for the fine, earnest, unpretentious, upright citizen that he was. His passing is truly a community loss. He was ill but for three weeks before his death, which took place at his home, Spruce and Fountain avenues, and came as a surprise to many of his friends. Thus ended a career that had seen the accomplishment of many things, well done, the creating of many friendships and the closing of a life that had been complete in all ways and will long be remembered by an appreciative community.
