Read More	ANDERSON INDEPENDENT-MIAL, Anderson, SC, June 30, 2009 IVA - Edwin DeWitt Martin, 88, of 6302 Highway 413, died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at his home. Born August 22, 1920 in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Luther Allen and Lizzie Pepper Martin. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a six-year veteran (1940-46) of World War II. He was a graduate of Erskine College (BA) in 1949 and earned a Master's degree in Governmental Administration from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1951. He was a retired public administrator and worked for over 35 years as a city, county, and town administrator. His career included administrative positions in Columbia, SC, Jesup, GA, Key West, FL, Dade County, FL, the University of Tennessee's Municipal Technical Advisory Service, Charleston County, SC, Staunton, VA, Hopewell, VA and Herndon, VA. He was a member of the Anderson County Historical Society, the Anderson County Genealogical Society, and the Anderson County Democratic Party. He was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church, US, and a member of Good Hope Presbyterian Church in Iva, SC. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Jean Covin Martin, a daughter, Janet Martin Shelnutt and husband, Chip of Woodbridge, VA, and a son, Donald Pepper Martin and wife, Donna of Downingtown, PA; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and 13 nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie Lee Gambrell and Ruth Thackston, and four brothers, Charles Allen, Benjamin Franklin, James Oliver, and Luther Ralph Martin. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Good Hope Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Annette Graham. Burial will be in Old Silver Brook Cemetery with military honors provided by Campbell Patriots Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
