Edwin included in this book the following autobiography: "Edwin was born in Warren, Vermont, April 19, 1834, married June 28, 1857, Emeline R. Howe, Moretown, at her parents'. She was born in Moretown, November 26, 1837. He remained on the farm with his parents until he was 17 years old and attended the district school, when he went to Moretown to learn harness making and carriage trimming. He remained there two and one-half years, having about five months' schooling. He then followed this trade together with bookkeeping and clerking in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts until 185, when he commenced the business at Waitsfield, Vt. He closed his business and moved to Northfield, Jan. 1857, where he remained until 1865, when oving to ill health he sold out. During the time there he was elected a justice of the peace, school committee man, secretary of a water company, secretary and S.W. of the Masonic lodge and served as county juryman. He then entered the employ of a publishing house in Hartford, Conn., and went to Pennsylvania, where in 1866, he located at Pottsville for the Aetna Life Insurance Company of Hartford, Conn. April 1, 1867, he located at St. Johnsbury, Vt., as its general manager for the northwestern part of the state. He issued a paper in the interest of his business and published a book of the descendants of his grandfather, 64 Moses, doing the typographical and mechanical work. He was for many years the local correspondent for a weekly paper, and for some years for the Boston dailies. Although the democratic party to which he belonged was very largely in the minority in the town and county, he was elected justice of the peace for many years, acting as trial justice, hearing hundreds of cases. He was also grand juryman in the U.S. and county courts, elected to all the positions of the committees of his party, town, county, district and state, and a nominee as judge on the county and state auditor on the state ticket. He was trustee, and for many years president and has been for 18 years treasurer of the Universalist society, also acted in many positions of trust and business for others." He had one daughter, Hattie Eva, who was born February 25, 1862, and died December 5, 1862, just a little more than nine months old. She was born at Moretown and is buried there.
