Lee, born near Rome, Henry County, Iowa, Nov.12, 1866, died June 8th, 1923 in Hillsboro, age 56 years, 6 mon. and 23 days. He was the youngest son of Rev. Jonathan and Mary Ann Lee, the latter being deceased when Ed was two years old. His stepmother, Mrs. Alice Lee, rearing him and who was ever faithful and the only mother he ever knew, still survives him. He was married to Nellie Cook, Oct. 19, 1887 and to this union six children were born, Walter C., Ernest W., Mary Emily, Albert J. Ruth and Robert E.; Ernest and Ruth, deceased. Besides the children who survive and his wife, Nellie Lee who took care of him thru-out his long illness, bestowing her loving and tender care to alleviate his intense suffering, he leaves the following brothers and sister; Curtis E. Lee of Salem, O.B. Lee of Ottumwa, R.J. Le of Los Angles, Calif. And Amanda Wood of Woolum, Arkansas. At the age of 14 he was baptized in the Round Prairie Baptist church and held membership there until his death. Mr. Lee lived on a farm until December, 1916 when he moved to Hillsboro where he was engaged in the grain and livestock shipping business. He was a man known among men as a man of unquestioned integrity and sterling character, public spirited and ever ready to offer help to those in need. Genial, hospitable, kind and courteous, he was loved most by those who knew him best. His friends were legion and he will be greatly missed not only by his family but those with whom he had business dealings. He was a member of Belmont Lodge No. 541 Hillsboro. Since August 1921 he has been under the physicians care a greater part of the time suffering from an incurable malady, and altho making a brave fight, he was reconciled to his going, remaining conscious and talking to his family until within a few hours of his death which occurred at 7 oclock Friday morning. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 oclock conducted by Belmont Lodge A.F.&A.M. with the sermon by Rev. Hughes, pastor of the Baptist church. Interment was in South Salem cemetery.
