From: Salem, (Ia.), Salem Weekly News Date: Thursday, October 6, 1955 Nellie Cook Lee, Obituary Nellie Cook Lee was August 27, 1870 on a farm northwest of Salem, Henry County, Iowa, and departed this life at the home of her daughter in Albia, Iowa on Sept. 30, 1955. She was 85 years, one month and 3 days of age. Nellie Lee was the daughter of Payton and Emily Cook and was the last of a family of five children. On October 19, 1887 she was united in marriage to Edwin H. Lee who preceded her in death on June 8, 1923. Six children blessed this union. Two sons Walter C. and Ernest Wand one daughter Ruth also preceded her in death. Left to morn her are Albert Lee of Salem, Iowa; Robert Lee of Burlington, Iowa and Mrs. Mary Smith of Albia, Iowa and numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren and a host of friends in the community. She spent her entire life in Henry County. In 1916 the family moved from the farm home south of Salem to Hillsboro, Iowa where she made her home, until two years ago when in failing health caused her to give up her home and go to live with her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Leon Smith of Albia. Here she was lovingly cared for until death called. She was a member of the Hillsboro Baptist church and the Hillsboro chapter of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Missionary Society of her church. Services were held Oct. 2, 1955 from Kasper Funeral Home in Salem at 2.00 P.M. with the Rev. Edwin Skoglund officiating. Mrs. Leah Beery was pianist and Mrs. Emma Jane Watts soloist. Bearers were Knight Hartley, Byron Church, Lawrence Harlan, Phil Hixson, Phil Blackford and Moron Doan. Interment was in Friends/South Salem cemetery.
