Read More	Our hero, Ed Bayne, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2003. Edwin Johnston Bayne was born on Aug. 6, 1915, to Andrew and Matilda Bayne. His father was a "tough ol' Scot," and his mother a gentle angel who imparted upon Ed and his younger brother Doug equally the values they would carry their entire lives. It is impossible to imagine two brothers who could have been closer than Ed and his "little" brother Doug. Ed was raised in Billings and attended Roosevelt and McKinley Elementary schools and graduated from Billings High School in 1935. Ed first got involved in Legion baseball at the age of 12. He played in the program for more than five years during which he played third base on Billings' first American Legion State Championship team in 1930. He played both basketball and football for the BHS Broncs and started on the varsity squad in both from his freshman to senior years. He helped lead the Broncs to three straight state football titles. He received a football scholarship to Washington State and played four years as a single wing quarterback and punter. He also played shortstop on the Washington State baseball team. As a sophomore, he received recognition in the Pacific Coast Conference in both sports. He was an Honorable Mention All-American in his junior year in football. After graduating from Washington State, Ed returned to Billings and played semi-pro baseball for the Billings Merchants' team. Later he would help direct the Midland Empire Semi-Pro Baseball League. He was also a member of the Stockmen, a nationally recognized AAU basketball team before the days of professional basketball and traveled around the country playing in tournaments. Ed later served as the District Commissioner for the AAU basketball league. On Nov. 5, 1940, Ed married his high school sweetheart, Marcella Ballard. He considered her the "best catch" he ever made. Their devotion and love for one another was a constant and theirs was the perfect partnership in every sense. Together they raised three children who learned what the word family really meant by the example their parents set every day of their lives. When his country called, Ed answered and served in the Coast Guard during World War II in the Aleutian Islands and South Pacific for three years. After returning from the war, he went back to the job he loved at the Billings Fire Department. He was proud to serve the city of Billings and was honored to work alongside his fellow firemen. He and his fellow firemen worked hard to give food, clothing, and money to families in need. Through the fire department he became involved and was chairman of one of the first muscular dystrophy fundraising drives in Billings. Anyone who knew Ed Bayne, knew that if he had a dollar in his pocket, he would try to give it to someone who needed it more than him. He retired from the fire department in 1968 as a captain. In 1948, at the special request of Fred Daylis, Ed agreed to take over the American Legion baseball program for one year. He returned to the program in 1950-51 as an assistant coach and helped guide Billings to two consecutive state championships. In 1952, he took over as head coach for the second time (of three) and led Billings to its first state championship of his coaching tenure. Over the years, his teams experienced an incredible level of success. He coached state championship teams in five different decades. During his tenure, his teams won 23 state championship, and he guided the Royals to 17 regionals, five sectionals, and four Legion World Series Tournaments. While Ed was proud of the athletic achievements of his players, he always made education his top priority. He was instrumental in helping arrange over 300 college scholarships for players. Ed was a member of the Elks Club, was given a lifetime membership to the Midland Roundtable, was a director on the MetraPark Board for years, served on the Montana Governor's Physical Fitness Advisory Council, was a member of Al Bedoo Shrine Temple and Pryor Masonic Lodge, and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 4. Ed was given many civic and athletic awards over the years. But he didn't coach sports for any awards and recognition he would receive. Although quite honored, he always felt uncomfortable receiving them. He did not coach for any monetary gain that went along with coaching as there was none. Instead, he dedicated his life to coaching the boys he loved that played for him as if they were his own sons and wanted to help them become better men. Ed leaves a lasting legacy of the love he had for his family, friends, and "the boys." He was the greatest husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather in the world. Ed is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marcie Bayne; his brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Margaret Bayne; his children, Ed. Jr. (Diane) Bayne, Jack (Claudia) Bayne, and Marcia (Greg) Pehlke; his grandchildren, Kim Townsend, Keri (Burke) Kufeld, Tina (Chris) Bishop, Mark (Kara) Bayne, Melissa Bayne, Mike (Jessica) Pehlke, DeAnna (Patrick) Price, Kristi (Eric) Feit, Christy (Jesse) Ellerbee, and Chelsey Bayne; and his great-grandchildren, Kylie, Taylor, and Bailey Kufeld, Brielle, Cierra, and Madison Bishop, Halle Bayne, Alexandra and Victoria Pehlke, and Kristian Price. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at First United Methodist Church (2800 4th Ave. N.). In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Eddie Bayne Memorial Fund for the Betterment of Youth, c/o First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 30918, Billings, MT 59116, or to a charity or service organization of your choice. Smith Downtown Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
