He spent the first 11 years on the homeplace and moved to Persia in 1925. He graduated from Persia High School with the Class of 1932 and furthered his education at the Oxford Institute of Business in Chicago, Illinois, graduating May 31, 1934 with a degree in Business Administration. On August 2, 1941, he married Vera May Chambers of Persia at the Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha. To this union four children were born: a son still born, a son Garyld Edwin of Blair, a daughter, Cheryl Elizabeth of Omaha and a daughter, LaRae Jolene of Persia. Edwin was a member of the Eagles Lodge #154 of Omaha. He farmed southwest of Persia and was employed by the Omaha Country Club for several years. Quitting this job, he and Rueben Iversen operated two service stations along I-80 until he was forced to retire because of failing eyesight and cataract surgery in 1976. He spent the last 13 years as a "Winter Texan". He is survived by his wife, Vera; one son, Garyld; two daughters, Cheryl and LaRae; one foster daughter, Arlene Zacharias; two granddaughters, Kerri Christie of Springfield, Missouri and Ryndee Olsberg of Omaha; one great-grandson, Daniel Christie of Springfield, Missouri; several nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; seven brothers, Charles, Albert, Walter, Arthur, Adolph, Scoop and Herman; and two sisters, Annie Zerbes of Paynesville, Minnesota and Elsie Stamp of Persia. Edwin died October 7, 1993 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs at the age of 79. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 9 at the United Methodist Church in Persia. The Rev. Theresa Mastrogiovanni and David P. Christie (Grandson) officiated. Music selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "One Day At A Time" with organist Mary Jenkins. Honorary bearers were Alfred Smith, Elmer Rosenbeck and Bill Stamp of Persia, Glen Golder of Creston, Iowa, Frank Costy of Mission, Texas and all his friends, relatives, neighbors and Winter Texans. Casket bearers were: Reuben Iverson, Greg Rocker, Duane Kemmish, Versal Smith, Robert S. Jensen and Milton Watson. Interment was at Valley View Cemetery, Persia.
