He passed away at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital Monday, Jan 4, 1971. He lived all his life in or near New Market, except for a tour of duty for his country from Sept 4, 1917 to June 12, 1919, part of which was spent with Co C 313, Field Signal Btn in France. Mankle was born Dec 8, 1888 near New Market, Iowa to Jacob and Mary Jane Hemphill Mankle: the youngest of 5 children. The others were John, Josie, Cass and George. He passed away at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital Monday, Jan 4, 1971. He lived all his life in or near New Market, except for a tour of duty for his country from Sept 4, 1917 to June 12, 1919, part of which was spent with Co C 313, Field Signal Btn in France. He graduated from Western Normal College at Shenandoah in 1907. He worked at several different jobs for awhile, such as: school teacher, restaurant operator, and telephone operator. He became a rural mail carrier Sept 19, 1921, and continued in that position until his retirement in July 1949. He was united in marriage with Laura Allison on Nov 15, 1925. To this union was born one son, Eldon, who was killed in an automobile accident Sept 20, 1970 near Yuba City, California. Edwin leaves his wife, Laura, and 3 nephews: John of Clarinda, Everett of Tola, Kansas, and Lawrence of Longmont, Colorado, and their children. CLARINDA HERALD-JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa
