Description	:	Former longtime Salida resident Edwin Merl Pugh, 92, died in his sleep Oct. 6, 2017, in Yankton, S.D. He was born June 23, 1925, on a ranch outside Miles City, Mont., to Charles and Icy Ozero Pugh. He was one of six children. Read More	Former longtime Salida resident Edwin Merl Pugh, 92, died in his sleep Oct. 6, 2017, in Yankton, S.D. He was born June 23, 1925, on a ranch outside Miles City, Mont., to Charles and Icy Ozero Pugh. He was one of six children. His father died when he was 3 years old, and his mother died when he was 16. Because of the loss of his parents, he was never able to finish his education. Orphaned and homeless at age 16, he and his older brother, Albert, moved to the Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Lame Deer, Mont., and their four sisters went to boarding school. Known as Ed or Eddie, Mr. Pugh joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in Guam, New Guinea and the Philippines on a PT boat. At age 17 he became a spotter for the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Pugh married Louise Eleanor Hanna of Boston, Mass., on March 30, 1946. They had six children. Mr. Pugh also had a stepson. The family moved to many states before spending much of their life in Salida. They lived in Montana, Massachusetts and North Dakota before moving to Colorado. All but two of the children were born in Colorado. The Pughs moved to Salida in 1964 from Climax and Leadville. He ran a carpool to Climax Mine until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Pugh worked as a janitor for UPS until his health would no longer allow him to work. In his formative years in Salida he was a mechanic for Ted Argys’ car company. He and his son Jerry helped demolish the Rio Grande building. Friends and family said he always lent a hand with a kind heart. Mr. Pugh loved tinkering with his cars and taught his son Leslie how to do so. He loved spending time with his family camping, picnicking, playing and singing music. His family said they cherish those times. Mr. Pugh also loved fishing with his best friend, John (Pat) Wilson. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks Lodge in Salida. Mr. and Mrs. Pugh were charter members of Calvary Baptist Church in Leadville and later joined Temple Baptist Church in Salida. The couple did missionary work in several states, including with the Paiute Indians in Utah. His family said they found this thought among his belongings: “I do not have a big house or a brand-new car or lots of money. What I have is amazing family and friends and memories that will last forever.” Mr. Pugh was preceded in death by his wife; daughters Juanita and Sandy; stepson, Robert Larsen; and grandson Robert Kennedy, Jr. Survivors include his children Leslie (Sandy) Pugh of Salida, Jerry Pugh of San Diego, Calif., Annette Owings of Howard and Deedee (Gary) Wood of Yankton, S.D.; grandchildren Jody, Michelle, Vanessa, Leslie Jr., Annette and Chris; and many great-grandchildren.
