Description	:	Edwin Popham one of the early settler of Delaware County was born in Somersetshire England, June 29,1826. He is a son of Henry Popham and Betsy Luff Popham both of whom were native of England. Edwin's father was engaged in the Peaceful pursuit of agriculture throughout his life, dying in 1877 at a ripe old age of eighty-five years. He was of quite disposition, honest, trustworthy, beloved and respected by all who knew him. His death was sincerely mourned, not only by relatives but by a large circle of friends. Edwin's father was engaged in the Peaceful pursuit of agriculture throughout his life, dying in 1877 at a ripe old age of eighty-five years. He was of quite disposition, honest, trustworthy, beloved and respected by all who knew him. His death was sincerely mourned, not only by relatives but by a large circle of friends. Mother of our subject was a life long and zealous member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was always ready to do all in her power to aid in its support. She was the mother if six children and died 1870. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother and stove to leads her children in paths of honesty and virtue and rear them to love of usefulness. Edwin Popham the subject of this bried memoir, was reared on a farm and taught the habit of industry and usefulness common to farm life. He received an ordinary common school education. He remained on his farm until he was 26 years of age and concluded to seek his fortune in the new world. Like all ambitious young men, he was eager to get a home of his own while he could enjoy the comforts of life and be independent. in 1852 he embarked for the US and after a voyage of one month landed safely in Boston Harbor. He at once set out for the great West coming by rail as far as Cherry Valley, IL and thence by stage to Dyersville, Dubuque County, Iowa. There were only 2 or 3 house in Dyersville at the time and the vast scope of the county west was almost uninhabited saved by wild beast and Indians. Mr. Popham had a brother living in the vicinity of Dyersville who preceded him to America and with his brothers he went to live remaining with him for 1 year, engaged in farming. In 1854 Mr. Popham purchased land in North Fork township Delaware County on which he has since lived. He was marred twice February 8, 1853 he married a Miss Sarah Wall, daughter of William and Betsy Wall, a native of England and a lady well worth to bear him companionship. This known, resulted in the birth of 9 children as follows: Jane (Jennie) Phoebe (deceased), Stephen (deceased), Elizabeth (deceased), Mary, Phoebe, Lida, Henry, and Stephan. His wife Sarah died June 22, 1879. She was a consistent Christian and a member of the Methodist Church for many years. Mr. Popham married again November 14, 1881 the lady of his choice being Miss Elizabeth Duckett who was born and reared in England. She is a daughter of Michael and Jemima Duckett both of whom were natives of England. The former died in 1878 and the later in 1844. In his political belief, Mr. Popham is a stanch Republican member, Methodist Church, and a liberal contributor to all charitable purposes. Mrs. Popham is a member of the Especial Church. Mr. Popham owns a well cultivated farm comprising 175 acres of prairie land. He is much respected and is recognized as one of the careful prudent industrious and progressive farmers of Delaware Co. The Dyersville newsletter of last week contained the following notice of the death of Edward Popham, father of Mrs. S. F. Keith. Mrs. Keith attended the funeral at Dyersville, Iowa. Edward Popham, who was among the very early settlers of this vicinity, died at his home and Dyersville on Sunday, July 23, 1899, after illness of nearly two years. The deceased was born in Somersetshire, England, on July 29, 1826, which he spent his boyhood days working on his father's farm. He received a common school education and at 25 years of age made up his mind to come to America and accordingly set sail and after arriving in this vicinity came directly to Dyersville. On Feb. 8, 1863, he was united marriage to Miss Sarah Wall and they at once settled on a farm about four miles southwest of this city in Delaware County. Nine children were born to them, 5 of home are still living. His wife died on June 22, 1879 and he again united marriage to Miss Elisabeth Duckett. His last wife survives him, and who carefully patiently ministered to him in the last protracted illness. Mr. Popham was taken ill about two years ago while living on his farm and has been the patient sufferers of the time. He purchased a home in Dyersville about a year ago and then moved there with his wife. In England he was a firm believer of the established church, but sometime after coming to this country he joined the Methodist Church and remained the faithful and constant member. Many who are here testify to his upright in sterling Christian manhood. The funeral took place last Monday afternoon. His remains arrived in this city about two o'clock and were accompanied by large number of friends from the place. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in this place, conducted by Rev. Foote of Dyersville assisted by Rev. J. B. Metcalf of this city. Interment took place to the Protestant cemetery east of town. This information was published by the Alta Advertiser, August 4, 1899.
