He was born in Norfolk(North Fork) Township, Delaware County, on May 19th of May 1859, a son of Edwin and Sarah (Wall) Popham, natives of England. In the early '50s they came to this county and located in Delaware County, where they began farming. Both passed away in this county, mourned by the many loyal friends. They were the parents of nine children, 3 of whom are living, those besides the subject of this review being Pheobe and Henry. Stephen Popham remained at home until his marriage, which occurred in 1882. He then removed to the western part of Iowa where he engaged in farming and stock raising for about eight years after which he went to South Dakota, there remaining for the same length of time upon the Yank(t)on Reservation. He took up a homestead of 160 acres, which made his total holdings 320 acres. In 1891 he returned to Delaware County and purchased a farm and Prairie Township(Masonville), where he lived for two years. He then sold that place and move to Manchester, which remained his home for one year. He next bought and moved upon a farm where he now lives, which is known as the Crampton farm and is located on section 19, Richland Township. It comprised of 160 acres and is well improved. He also owns 80 acres in Buchanan County, the state, which is likewise under a high state of cultivation. His sons own 168 or acres and Tripp county, South Dakota, on what was formerly the Rose Bud Reservation. In 1882 Mr. Popham was united in marriage to Miss Rosa Duckett, a native of England and a daughter of William and Elizabeth Duckett, who in 1880 came to America and located on a farm in North folk Township, this county. Both of her parents are deceased. Their family member two children but Mrs. Popham is the only one living. By her marriage she had five children, namely: Arthur C.; Frank S., deceased; Clarence H., who graduated of business college in Washington, D.C., and is now operating the home farm, giving special attention to the raising of Aberdeen cattle, one who died in infancy, and Sarah E. The parents attended the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Popham is a Republican in his political beliefs and has served as Justice of the peace and school director. He was made valuable contributions to the agricultural development of Delaware County and has at the same time won himself individual prosperity which no one granted him as it is the reward of a well dedicated labor. ..This information is provided by the 1914 Delaware County biographies pages 146-147. ---------------------- Stephen Popham answers summoned well-known citizen of Lamont dies of heart attack at his home last week. Our community was shocked at the sudden passing away of Stephan Popham and his home in Lamont, Iowa Feb. 23, 1931, heart failure being given as the cause. Funeral services were held that the home Thursday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Peterson of Dickens, Iowa assisted by Bernard Atkins of Lamont officiated. Interment was made in the family lot at Buffalo Grove Cemetery. Hymns were sung by Charles Harrison, Charles Dopp, F. N. Bates and Rev. J. Atkins, accompanied by Mrs. Ethel Carr and casket bears were Michael, Arthur and Frank Duckett of Stanley, Theodore and John Wall and H. Hawe of Manchester. Mr. Popham was born on the old homestead 3 1/2 miles southwest of Dyersville in 1859 and grew to manhood there, a son of the late Mr. Mrs. Edward Popham. He was united in marriage with Rosina Duckett of England Feb. 5, 1883 who came to America two years previous to her marriage. To this union five children were born, three of whom survive. Mrs. Popham died four years ago and one son, Frank, 19, and infant son preceded their father in death. Mr. Popham engaged in farming most of his life and proved himself successful. He had been a resident of Lamont and vicinity for 25 years. Surviving or(are) his children Arthur C. of Lamont; Clarence H. of Manchester and Sarah E. at home; four grandchildren, Erma, Alice, Charles and Mildred, of Lamont; one brother, Henry of Long Beach, CA the last surviving member of the family of nine children.
