Effie was born on Dec. 23, 1914, on a farm near Marathon, Iowa, to Erick B. and Anna J. (Chader) Holmes. Effie was born on Dec. 23, 1914, on a farm near Marathon, Iowa, to Erick B. and Anna J. (Chader) Holmes. Those left to cherish her memory are: daughters and their spouses, Louise and Darrel Sebree of Lincoln, and Patrice and Bruce Keller of Elkhorn; and son and his spouse, Richard and Susan Torpin of Walton; grandchildren and spouse, R. Seth and Jena Torpin of Minneapolis, Minn., Blake Keller of Omaha, Trevor Torpin of Omaha, and Heather Torpin of Walton; brother-in-law, Kenneth Torpin of Doniphan; nieces; nephews and a host of friends and relatives. After Effie's birth, her family moved to Hordville and Effie began kindergarten in the Hordville School and graduated from Hordville High School in 1933. She continued her education at Nebraska Central College in Central City after first taking a year off after high school to study piano with a private teacher. She completed two years at Nebraska Central College and then completed her teaching certificate at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Effie met her future husband, R. Stanley Torpin, at Nebraska Central College and they were united in marriage in Onawa, Iowa, on Dec. 28, 1940. They made their home in Central City, where Stanley practiced law and served many years as Merrick County Attorney. Effie's first teaching position was in District 25 south of Hordville. She then taught for two years at the Hord Home Ranch School, two years in Chapman, and four years in the Central City schools. She also substitute taught in the Central City schools and was a private piano teacher for many years. She served as a piano accompanist in high school and college throughout her life and was the Central City United Methodist Church organist for many years. After their retirement, Effie and Stanley enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, Ariz. Effie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City. As well as being the church organist, she was active in the United Methodist Women and she was involved in all aspects of church life. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Education Sorority, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Arbor Chapter 200 in Central City, and the Central City Sketch Club. She was preceded in death by her husband R. Stanley Torpin; her parents; brothers, Lee and Carroll Holmes; and sisters, Annette Abbott, Josephine McConnell, and Carolyn Miescke.
