Eilene was born on November 12, 1931, in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest and Marion (McGregor) Hahn. She was raised in Clarksville and graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1949. Smith, age 88, of Clarksville, Iowa and formerly of Janesville, Iowa, died Friday, December 27, 2019, at Unity Point Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Eilene was born on November 12, 1931, in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest and Marion (McGregor) Hahn. She was raised in Clarksville and graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1949. On August 19, 1951, Eilene was united in marriage to Russell Behrends at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple would later divorce. In 1983, Eileen was united in marriage to Kenneth Smith at the United Methodist Church in Janesville. During her life Eileen worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell, at Carnation/Nestlé in Waverly, Iowa, for 28 years retiring in 1987, and then Waverly Wal Mart, before fully retiring in 2016, to stay at home enjoying family and friends. Eilene was a member of United Methodist Church in New Hartford and the American Legion Auxiliary of New Hartford. Her greatest enjoyment in life was time spent with her family. Eilene also enjoyed volunteering for the Share Iowa Program and playing the organ for her cat Harriet. Eilene’s memory is honored by: four children, Melanie (Mike) Nieman of Janesville, Iowa, Kelly Behrends of Clarksville, Iowa, Gary Behrends of Austin, Texas, and Richard Behrends of Charleston, South Carolina; special friend, John McEnany of New Hartford, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Shirley (Ben) Goddard of Charles City, Iowa, Janet Vance of Clarksville, Iowa, and Virginia (Al) Freymiller of Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; a daughter, Maureen Behrends; a son, David Behrends; special friend, Bill Pines; and a brother, Virgil Hahn. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly where the family will greet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 3, at United Methodist Church in New Hartford. Eilene will then be cremated, and private burial of her ashes will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery in Janesville, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to her Family. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family with arrangements.
