Elaine was born on June 10, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Bess (Strang) Norman. She was baptized and confirmed on July 1, 1948 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, Iowa, transferring her membership in 1953 to St. Paul's Lutheran in Waverly. Elaine was born on June 10, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Bess (Strang) Norman. She was baptized and confirmed on July 1, 1948 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, Iowa, transferring her membership in 1953 to St. Paul's Lutheran in Waverly. Elaine attended the Cedar Rapids school system, graduating in June of 1945 from Roosevelt High School. She then attended the University of Iowa from 1945-1947, and this is where she met Paul. On August 18, 1947, she was united in marriage to Paul Shager Kosbau in Cedar Rapids. The couple moved to Waverly in 1947, where Paul taught Art and Elaine was secretary at the Waverly High School for 2 years before they began their family. Four children were born, Susan, David, JoAnn and Jean. Paul continued to teach Art until he suffered a massive heart attack and died in 1962 at the age of 42. With four children at home, Elaine went back to Wartburg College where she received her B.S. in Education in January of 1965. She taught for 2 ½ years in Denver, Iowa, and then transferred to Waverly, where she taught 4th grade at both Southeast and Irving for a total of 24 years, retiring in May of 1989. Elaine then was a volunteer for the Waverly School System for 8 years and was a Hospital Auxiliary volunteer and worked at the gift shop for 14 years. Elaine was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in July of 2013, and became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community on August 29th of this year. Elaine was a 60 year faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, where for many years was active with helping with the funeral lunches. She was a member of Friends of the Library, Literature Club, Bridge Club and Hospital Auxiliary where she had been a member since 1965. On May 10, 2001, Elaine was recognized by the Hospital Auxiliary as Volunteer of the Year as she contributed over 170 hours the past year. In her spare time, she loved doing needle point and making newborn caps that she donated to the Waverly Hospital. Elaine enjoyed her family and friends very much and would love to cook meals at her home on special occasions. She also enjoyed flowers, playing cards and her special times with her walk and talk group. Elaine is survived by her four children and their spouses, Susan (Don) Mariano of White Plains, New York; David (Diane) Kosbau of Brookings, South Dakota; Jo (Steve) Corson of Waverly, Iowa; Jean (Tim) Kuethe of Waverly, Iowa; 4 grandchildren, Jenny (Ryan) Bauer of Brookings, South Dakota, Jill Kosbau of Brookings, South Dakota, Nikki (Zach) Ladage of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Chris (Ashley) Corson of Waverly, Iowa; 6 great grandchildren, Jase, Kyle and Will Bauer, Tristan and Brileigh Corson, and Emerson Ladage; a brother-in-law, Ralph Kosbau of Marshalltown, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Waltz of Brookings, South Dakota and Jo (Norm) Fintel of Simpsonville, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul on September 29, 1962; 2 brothers-in-law, Howard Kosbau and his wife, Gail, and Wayne Waltz and 2 sisters-in-law, Charlotte Krueger and Etta Kosbau. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family for a donation in Elaine's name to be established at a later date.
