A Elaine was born on December 13, 1921, on the farm near Larrabee, Iowa, to John and Ruth (Dunkelberger) Wilkie. She attended Larrabee Consolidated School and graduated in 1939. Read More	Elaine Ruth Gano, age 94, of Boone, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on August 28, 2016. A Elaine was born on December 13, 1921, on the farm near Larrabee, Iowa, to John and Ruth (Dunkelberger) Wilkie. She attended Larrabee Consolidated School and graduated in 1939. After graduation, Elaine attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake for a year. Her college career was interrupted when she and Virgil Edward Gano decided to get married on June 22, 1940, in Worthington, Minnesota. Because of the war, Elaine and Virgil decided to move to Vancouver, Washington, so Virgil could work in the ship yards. Eventually, Virgil and Elaine moved back to Iowa where they farmed in the Cherokee area for the next 26 years. Elaine worked at the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee as a Therapeutic Dietician. During those years, the Gano house was filled with fun and laughter as Virgil, his brothers and friends played musical instruments while Elaine and others joined in with song. One of their proudest adventures was to be a part of the Godfather’s Pizza family. In 1991, to be closer to their children, Elaine and Virgil moved to Boone where Virgil passed away a few months later. Elaine kept herself busy by volunteering in various organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace, and the Boone Women’s Club. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Boone Women’s Club. Elaine served as an advocate for the Eastern Star Masonic Home and the Westhaven Community. A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, she was a Lay Leader, a member of the United Methodist Women, and a church choir member for over 60 years. Elaine lived a full life and wanted to be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a good friend to all, and the one who knew the Lord and tried to follow his teachings and pass it on to others. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Virgil, and siblings Maxine Wilkie Urban, Gladys Wilkie Johnson, John Wilkie, and Jim Wilkie. She is survived by her children Virgean Tronick and husband Tom of Boone, Dennis Gano and wife Barbara (Johnson) of Ames, and Jack Gano and wife Susan (Krekow) of Clive; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and her special friend John Buche of Boone.
