Coleman was born in 1884 at Guthrie Center, Iowa. His mother died when he was 7 and he lived with his grandparents until he was 11, when he came to live at Tiger Butte with his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel T. Coleman. As a young man he trailed cattle from the Musselshell country to Fort Benton for various cattle ranches. He later worked for the Neill Creek Cattle Co. in the Tiger Butte area, where he met Lillie F. Anderson of St. Helena, Neb., who was visiting a sister, Mrs. Ollie Irwin. They were married July 19, 1911, in Great Falls. The couple homesteaded in the Tiger Butte area and later moved to North Willow Creek Ranch. In 1919, they moved to Belt, where he was a drayman for the Merkle and Broadie mines. When the mines closed, he sold Raleigh products and then served as a state liquor store vendor and as the Belt School custodian. He was a 57-year member of the Odd Fellows lodge and a member of Olive chapter of Rebekah lodge. Mrs. Coleman died in 1973. He is survived by sons, Elbert Ray of Choteau, Robert of Missoula, and LaVerle of Richland, Wash.; daughters, Mrs. Helen Marsh of Corvallis, Mrs. Grace Dawson of Seeley Lake and Viola Coleman of Belt; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Myrtle Johnson of Mount Vernon, Wash., Clara Healey of Sedro Wooley, Wash., Laura Barton and Martha Eldred of Fairbanks, Alaska and Mary Accocello of Bremerton; brothers, T. Guy Coleman of Hendersonville, N. C., and Marion Coleman of Blanchard, Wash.
