He is survived by two children, a son and a daughter, and other relatives and a host of friends. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, September 8, 1927 Elbridge L. Downing, the fourth son of Wm. and Sarah Miller Downing, natives of Virgina and Ohio, was born in Jefferson county (sic), Iowa, April 27, 1844. Life's pilgrimage was closed for him at his Boulder, Colorado, home September 6, 1927, having rounded out 83 years, 4 months, 9 days. In December, 1863, he joined the United States army enlisting in Co, M, 4th Iowa Cavalry. Duty led him into all movements and engagements of his company until they were discharged at Davenport, Iowa, in August, 1865. Early in 1870 he and his pal migrated to Nuckolls county (sic), Nebr., and took claims near the present site of Nora. Here he took an active part in the organization of the county, being the first county clerk. In July, 1872, Mr. Downing and Miss Mary Hewitt plighted their truth and began to build a heaven on earth--the home. In Decmeber, 1887, this home was broken by the wife being taken by death, leaving a little girl Eva who is now Mrs. C.L. Rippeatau of Clay Center. On the 21st of November 1897, Mr. Downing and Miss Marilla E. Adamson was united in marriage and again a home was established to which two sons, Draper Lloyd and Russell, were added. The blood of the pioneer being the the veins of the Downing family, they in 1919 sought new fields to conquer and moved to Boulder, Colorado, where the sons might have greater advantages educationally, and the climatic conditions would be more pleasing and advantageous for all. Here, in the perfection of material things, the hand of death reached out and took the younger son, Russell, on February 11, 1921. In June, 1922, this wife was taken from the home by the destroyer of earthly life, and Mr. Downing and his son Draper were left to comfort and solace each other. Mr. Downing had taken part in putting down the Rebellion against his own country, so was always active in the meetings of the G.A.R. He also had had a large part in wrestling from the wilds a home with a competence. As he faced the setting sun, his trembling hand reached out for those who had gone on before him. And while thus musing the spirit of God spoke unto him, saying "come unto me, all ye that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest." Then before the congregation in Boulder, Colo., he accepted his Christ and for five years Brother Downing has walked this earthly parth with his new pal, Jesus, and now has stepped into the unknown with a firm faith and knowledge of ever being with Him. The son Draper Lloyd, with his wife, made every contribution to the father's happiness possible. The daughter, Mrs. Eva Rippetau, with her husband and two little sons gave as much to his happiness also as they were permitted. As a relative, a soldier, a pioneer, a citizen, a friend and Christian brother, Mr. Downing did his best, as far as he was able to discern, to fulfill every obligation. Knowning he was mortal and frail, he trusted in God for guidance in paths of righteousness. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Frank Sanborn of Clay Center, from the Christian church (sic) in Nelson, on Saturday, September 9th. Interment was made in the family burying ground in Nelson cemetery. The pallbearers were: F.E.
